Destiny 2 back on an XBOX one, importing game tag

I'm trying to load Destiny 2 back on an XBOX one but the system won't let me use the game tag I had been using. it tells me that game tag is already being used, therefore I would lose all my progress. Anyone know how I can use my old game tag?

Technically, your "old gamertag" is an older Microsoft account. To be able to use your older profile to play Destiny 2 on Xbox One, you will need to recover that Microsoft account. Try to submit an account recovery form at http://account.live.com/acsr and
once you do, expect to receive an email within 24 hours with an update to your recovery request.

I think it could revive the Destiny 2 game but the only problem I have with it is it's 40 dollar price tag. I played Destiny 2 so much but I do not wanna spend 40 dollars just to get back into it.
