Demos/Free Trials on 360 but not on One?

So, today I went onto my Xbox 360 after a long hiatus to catch up on Mass Effect 2 and other games and while on the dashboard, I discovered something interesting. Some of you may have already known about it (in fact I'm sure at least one of you has mentioned
it before), but I just found out that there are demos/free trials for cross-generational games on the Xbox 360 that aren't available on the Xbox One (I'm currently in the process of downloading the free trials on my Xbox 360 for both Child of Light and Super
Time Force to see if they're actually any good). Furthermore, there's a juxtaposition with some of those games because they're considered arcade titles on the Xbox 360, but not on the Xbox One. Now, I know the Xbox One doesn't differentiate between games,
but I find it odd that the games that release on both consoles can still be considered arcade games on the 360. I always wondered why some people referred to them as arcade games when I always said they weren't - now I know why that is.

In regards to these two issues, I have two questions, one for each issue:

1) How come the demos/free trials for games like Child of Light, Super Time Force, etc. are available on the Xbox 360 and not on the Xbox One (in other words, what's MS' reasoning for this)?

2) How come the games released on both consoles are still considered arcade games on the Xbox 360 instead of the Games on Demand?

I would think that if a game's going to be released as a demo/free trial on one console, it would be released on the other, since it's on the same service (Xbox Live), so to speak. I also would think that the Xbox 360 would be updated to be more in line
with the One (and definitely vice-versa, but I don't want to get into that).

What are your ruminations on this topic?

Yes, you certainly can. The bottom of a 2 Day Gold Pass states the following:

XBOX LIVE 2-Day gold Membership, free trial allows access to these Gold features: online multiplayer gaming, Netflix, ESPN on XBOX Live, Facebook, free game demos, exclusive discounts, promotions and video content.

Free 2-day trial offer is only for use on the XBOX 360 and is not valid for current XBOX Live Gold Members. At the end of your 2-day trial period, your membership will default to the FREE XBOX Live Membership, unless you elect to extend your XBOX Live Gold
Membership.

Now what this doesn't tell you is that you cannot play in ranked matches with the trial membership, but you are free to play in social matchmaking playlists for games.

Most if not all of the XBLA games have a free trial you can download and there's a large selection of playable demos for many retail releases also on the marketplace.

 

MS has a policy in place stating every Xbox Arcade game is requireded to have a demo. MS did away with this policy for Xbox One, since they do not distinguish games based on GoD, Arcade and indie.

Demo's/trials hurt sales of games according to research so it makes sense developers opting not to create demos. Also remember developing a demo requires work and effort that could be put towards polishing the final game.

 

X24hrs2livex beat me to it but in essense there are different policies in effect and demos do hurt sales especially for arcade style games because people choose to just play the demo over and over again

 

I already know about these policies and figured that would be the case, but if the game is already going to suffer from poor sales for having a demo on the Xbox 360, why not put it on the One as well?

 

Time and resources. If you have to have a demo on 360 then it needs to be made. If you dont need one on XB1 you dont have to devote staff to the task. Remember its different architectures

 

Because M knows Xbox 360 has far more peps on 360 compared to 1?

Many times demos are just a level or 2 of the game.

I played the Trials demo and thats exactly what it is. So while the theory is sound...thats rarely the case....and not in this one either.
