gamertag change, users who wish to do that must pay the fee if their gamertag is not one that was automatically selected by the system when they first signed up for Xbox Live.

They do give you a warning. It is called the code of conduct you agreed to when making your account.

Xbox used to let you change your gametag yourself in the past but players abused that and they stopped doing so.

Now as you are now aware they just give you a randomly generated name and then if you want to change it after that you would have to pay for the name change.

Sorry to say but you wont get a free pass on this. You will have to pay for the name change like everyone else.

No one on the forums or at support can do anything more about that. You will just have to take it as a lesson learned.
