Deleting my Gamertag (Microsoft Account) completely

Close Microsoft Account page. There you will be given simple instructions on how to permanently close your account. Upon completion, you will be given a grace period to reopen your account in case you want it back.

There's no way for you to completely remove a gamertag from the system yourself. Removing it from a Microsoft account or deleting the Microsoft account, does not delete the Xbox account. If the gamertag was freed up in one of the previous mass gamertag releases
or the person who owns the account doesn't sign in for 5 years (starting 2016) the tag will be freed up for use.

You can indeed close/delete an account completely; just follow the instructions found here:

However, if you just want to change the e-mail associated with your account rather than starting over completely, just follow the instructions found here instead:

Once an account has connected to the servers, there is no way to completely delete it. You could change the email for the online account to something different in order to use that email on your offline account. support.xbox.com/.../switch-gamertag-to-different-microsoft-account

There is no way to completely delete an Xbox account and its gamertag/nickname. Even deleting your Microsoft account will not free up the gamertag.

To free up the gamertag (or nickname), you would need to change it to something else. Then the original gamertag would be available to be used on another account.
