Deleting a Microsoft account

Will deleting a microsoft account also delete the email address linked to it? My problem is that my main email account has an old xbox gamertag attached to it, while the gamertag i actually use is attached to another email, now i want to delete this old
gamertag/microsoft account, so i can attach my main email address to my main gamertag but i dont want to lose my main email address if it also gets deleted along the old gamertag

if it is a Microsoft email address (live.com, hotmail.com, outlook.com) then yes the whole account will delete including the email address.

You must use your Microsoft account to keep it active. This means you must sign in at least once in a two-year period to keep your Microsoft account, and associated Services.

The email is correct and I used the account to login to xbox the day before.

When was the last time you had used your account? Are you checking the email if that is correct? If you are getting an error that the Microsoft account does not exist when you try to log in to it, that usually means the email is not a Microsoft account or it got inactive but if you have been using this before, you must have used a different Microsoft email for that.

One thing to note is you may not be able to close your account with an Xbox Live account associated with it (I'm not 100% sure on this one). If that is the case, you could create a "dummy" Microsoft Account, transfer your XBL account over there, then deactivate
the original.
