Unless I have the wrong end of the stick, sure you could only play with Gold Live before, apart from that it was free though.

Drunky I think it's more than likely that I misread it! Defiance :). Game will be free not sure how the sub thing will work now I have rad a few sources, would imagine that would be the hold up with MS though?

When I read 'free to play' I was thinking it had a second subscription you have to pay for like Skyrim online. But free to none gold members makes sense now.

I suppose I can see what you mean.

However on these boards "Free to play" is misleading, especially in the context of an MMO where most people will understand it to mean a subscription bases MMO that has waived it's subscription fee because people weren't interested enough to be playing it
in the fashion of "Star Wars: The Old Republic" and "Age of Conan".

"Defiance" has never had a subscription fee. It's always been "Free To Play" in that sense. All that's required (as you know anyways) is a copy of the game and because it's a multiplayer game being delivered on the XBox LIVE service, an XBox LIVE Gold
    account.

Why anyone acts surprised when a multiplayer game requires them to use XBox LIVE (and I'm not saying you're one of these people) is quite mind boggling. It's been that way since the days of the original XBox and we're on the 3rd version now.

I think the game itself is free as well Az, I'm not entirely sure myself to be honest.

I can only go from what I've read on different threads but it sounds like they're letting you download the game for a free trial period.

  11. MMOs are a service separate from Xbox live AZ, so it does make sense that they should be separate from the Gold paygate. You're paying a subscription for the MMO's upkeep and to sustain regular content updates.

As far as I'm aware Live isn't even involved in any part of the MMO's net framework.

Also, FFXI and Phantasy Star Universe didn't need a gold subscription to play. FFXIV didn't make it to Xbox because MS wanted to introduce the gold paywall then, on top of the sub you'd be paying Square.

    Hi Trout.

Welcome to the XBox Forums and the world of XBox.

XBox LIVE is the service you pay for to play your games online.

So an online game that requires a LIVE Gold subscription is nothing to be surprised about.

An MMO is normally going to need you to have XBox LIVE because by it's nature it's an online game.

I think "Final Fantasy XI" on the XBox 360 allowed you to play the game online without a Gold Subscription but it is a rare exception to the norm.

Be careful about buying TESO. You'll pay full price for the game but only have the right to play it for 30 days. After that you have to keep throwing money at them or they shut your access down.

As for needing Gold to play TESO online... it's on XBox LIVE.

    No-brainer really.

I know OXM said last week they think before Elder Scrolls is released it will be announced that you won't need to have Xbox LIVE membership to play it.

Wouldn't surprise to be honest after the out cry about it.

Either that or the monthly fee will be dropped after a bit due to poor sales.
