    Debit Card Charged for Unauthorized Game Downloads


    I was checking my bank statement today and noticed that there were 3 separate charges from xbox live on 1/27/2014 totaling $85.57 that were not authorized. I have since found out that my 8 year old nephew is the person responsible for downloading the games
    and would like to find out about cancelling the games from my account and getting a refund issued. I don't even own the system nor is it in my possession and didn't realize all my debit card info would be saved into the system after only ever using it once
    before to pay for an xbox live gold subscription. Please help with this situation as I do not have money to just throw away like that. Also, I have since removed my card from payment options on my account to ensure this never happens again. Hopefully this
    is the correct area to be posting about this but if not sorry and please point me in the right direction.

    Not true. A lot of factors go into whether or not you will be stuck with the charges. Never EVER use your debit card online. Not sure what state you are in (I'm sure each have their own laws on the subject) but as a general rule debit cards have very little consumer protections. So, I guess be careful.

    There are no refunds and it's your responsibility to remove bank information from an account if you do not want it there. The only option you have--which I'm sure you do not wish to take--is to file criminal charges on your 8 year old nephew.

    The physical security of your console is your responsibility, if you allow people to use with a card on it then you are authorizing them to make charges on your account.

    Sounds like you need to have a conversation with your nephew and his parents about this and your getting re-imbursed for the charges he has made with your credit card. Might I inquire as to how he came to possess YOUR XBL account?
    That would be the only way he could buy those items, with the account that the credit card is attached to.

    Just because other companies have given refunds for the hijinks of children does not mean you are entitled to one here. Put a pin on your account and don't allow an auto-sign it so your little rug rat cannot sign in and make unauthorized purchases in the
    future. Then have a talk with your kid about the issue. Chances are, young kids cannot see this as blatant theft.

    A similar occurrence happened with my nephew and my brother. They had friends over and were playing Minecraft CD. My brother let his friends 'borrow' my gamertag. I warned him that my account was linked to my bank account and to use it without my acknowledgement
    was unacceptable. I also stated that if I find any unauthorized charges, he will be paying the difference with interest. He shrugged it off saying they were incapable of such a thing. That's when I added a pin to even log on to xbox live. Later that day, he
    noticed a charge on his account and questioned me about it. Turns out, the nephew purchased a copy of a game using his gamertag/info. He made my nephew pay off the difference through chores.

    As mentioned by fellow ambassadors, you would need to speak with xbox support as we are unable to deal with anything financial. I hope this gets resolved as soon as.
