smileskybird: the Kinect One has two A/D converter chips for its mics, but no processing is done on the digital audio information inside the Kinect. All the audio processing is done by the XBOX ONE. That is no different from how the headset mic works: there
is an A/D converter chip in the controller.

The bitrate and bit depth of the digital audio stream may be much higher on the Kinect since it does not have to transmit the information wirelessly, but it needs to be that much better because it potentially has to do more noise cancellation and separate
sound sources, which would be very hard to do on a low resolution stream. Voice recognition would not require as good of a stream if you know the mic is right next to the person's mouth and you can ignore everything below a certain amplitude.

Also I am not trying to suggest that Kinect motion-based games like Kinect Sports should support using the mic that's connected to the controller. I'm just asking why that games where the only use of the Kinect is to do voice commands can't also be made
to work via the headset mic OR the Kinect mic (whichever the iser prefers).

I'd prefer they not be listed as "Kinect games" because they don't take any advantage of what the Kinect primarily is (a motion-capture system).

I don't really YELL, but I do find I have to talk very loudly especially if my game volume is really loud and there is music playing and other people in the room talking, etc. As an audio engineer, I think it would be more accurate in such situations to
use a headset mic to do voice commands. I did do calibration but it still doesn't work reliably enough for my tastes.

    Dear MS: XBox Kinect question

    OK Ill bite..

    1. The kinect is more than a mic. Yo need more than a mic to issue commands. It has to take what you say, figure out what you said, turn those sounds into digital commands then issue those commands to the right area. A mic.. in laymens terms, transform
your voice to a digital signal where a speaker transform that signal into sound waves.. nothing more nothing less.

1B: If you are yelling, your kinect is not properly calibrated.

    2. Each game is specific. If it uses the kinect, it will say it on the game info (kinect enabled). You said you want motion but yet want to use a mic for voice commands?? make up your mind

    3. while you are at it, might as well as for some monies, a new car, a gold ring, a new house... wy not MS has billions and can afford it right?

Tid bit of info.... MS or any of the suits or devs or tech guys are in these forums. This is the general discussion area. Nobody of worth will ever read what you just wrote.
