DDOSED

Hello,

I keep on getting DDOSED on xbox live.

I can't play normal games anymore...

Can someone help me please?

What do you mean you keep getting DDoS'd?

 

Since this is done through your Internet connection and not Live, you would need to contact your ISP and alert them to the issue.

 

Back in Feburary of this year I had this happen on BF3 was playing TDM on Narhsarcanals and got IP booted because I was goofing off and ended up killing the admin for the server five times in a row purely by accident of course as I was in no way hunting
him down I was just happening upon him.

I got to play through one match where I did exceptionally well going something like 29 and 5 and about one third of the way through the second match he kicked me and I know it was him because I killed him and two seconds later my connection got disrupted
and I lost my connection to the game and to xbox live.

I then noticed that the DSL light on my wireless modem was blinking with a busy signal and I have my console connected to the modem via an ethernet cable, because my modems IP was being pinged or tagged with spam requests I completely lost the ability to
connect to the internet through the xbox and our two computers neither of which could connect due to DNS reslove errors.

My home network was being DoSed but fortunately for me my modem has an anti DoS/DDoS feature which causes the modem to immediately request a new IP address from the ISP in the event of an attack of this type occuring which is supposed to allow you to get
back online quickly.

Once the modem was turned off for thirty seconds and turned back on again I was able to get reconnected to the internet using my computers but the xbox-360 kept failing so I figured that the DoS attack was still spaming the consoles IP to stop it from being
able to connect to the internet or xbox live so I quickly changed the the IP setting from obtain address automatically to manual and entered in my own IP addres which then stopped any further disruption to my connection.

This is something I don't think many people think to do in the event of a DoS attack which is what happens to private home networks, DDoS is something a bit different its done on a large scale using hundreds of machines or bots to spam a public service like
xbox live.

My ISP also changes the IP adresses of each device connected to the network every twenty four hours as we are on a one day lease for each address this also helps to mitigate DoS attacks somewhat.

I've even had this happen on Dark Souls where the PVP invader kept dieing and eventually booted me from live out of anger and frustration, I agree you need to contact your ISP and let them know when something like this is happening as they are really the
only ones who can esclate any kind of action against the attacker/s.

A few years ago I got DoSed and we were using an onld 2Wire 550 wireless modem which did not have DoS protection and the attack lasted for four days eventually burning out the modem we then had to go and replace the unit with a better one.

DoS attack happen from computer to network over the internet and this kind of activity is extremely illgeal because the attacker can see information about your IP address that xbox live supposedly hides by using one of many programs out there to sniff your
network while your are in a multiplayer session and once they do this they can see your actual private IP instead of the public IP that it gets translated in to when you connect to the internet and through this illegal practice they can flood your private
network disconnecting you from the internet.

This kind of attack usually subsides on its own but sometimes it doesn't and thats because the attacker is monitoring your local network wating for your IP to attempt to go active and when it does it regsiters on their end and then the DoS attack starts
all over again automatically.

 

@DrumBones85 - your public IP address is public, hence the word "public".

When it comes to TCP/IP, there are certain rules that can't be broken.

In this situation, you can't do anything with a local, or private IP address, as the private address space can not be routed to the Internet-at-large.

No one are sniffing this persons network, atleast not the person that are carrying out the attack. He/she (the attacker) sniffs, or analyze its own local traffic.

NAT devices are known to buffer explicit mappings, or bindings.

 

@taidara, I get what your saying and thanks for explaining. : )

What I don't get is how the ISP's both broadband and dsl can allow such activity to take place surely they see when a subscriber of theirs is spamming somebody else, I would think that sould constitute an instant loss of service for the the attacker if nothing
else but from what I've read and seen the ISP's are more worried about keeping their customers and thereby the money they get paid each month versus actually policing their own service..

I'm still learning the ins and outs of networking and such so thanks again for the explination.

The ISPs are too lazy to continuously monitor the traffic flow between their network to your network. The main thing they monitor for is data usage, and with some ISPs, content being uploaded/downloaded (torrent files). When it comes to actual DDoS attacks,
as mentioned before, it occurs through the use of your Public IP, rather than the private or network one provided by your ISP.
