Dashboard Won't Load and Controller Keys are Locked

Greetings all,

I have a slim model 360 that was working fine just last night. However, tonight when I turn the unit on, it seems to hang just after boot on the load screen prior to the dashboard. I can't use the controller even in this state, so there's no menus I can
access (even if I use the home button on the controller). The controller is definitely on and synced to the console, as I can turn the console on with it - but it won't allow me to do anything else (it won't even let me power the unit off).

There's no way for me to access any of the screens to clear cache or anything of the sort. No updates were recently downloaded or installed, nor were there any other changes.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It is ! Xbox one devices are not region locked, only digital products and keys are sometimes region locked.

 

controller sync problems and games not loading fix!!

hi everyone, see a few posts with no answers to the controller sync problems and games dropping back to the dashboard, simple fix, power up the console, wait for the dashboard to load, unplug controller, and then unplug the xbox power lead from the wall,
plug controller back in, the xbox should load up and BOOM!! your controller is working and so are your games

be sure to disconnect the power supply at least 60 seconds from the wall socket.

Disconnect all usb devices from the console. After that try to power on the console again to see what happens.

If that didn't solve anything, power the console down again and remove any xbox 360 hard drive like shown here:

support.xbox.com/.../add-remove-hard-drive

Thanks for that, I should have mentioned this is a 4 GB unit, so there is no removable HDD. I disconnected the power supply, but now the unit hangs on the Xbox 360 startup screen and doesn't even act as if it's loading the dashboard.

Any other thoughts?

 

Just an update here guys...

Once I plugged my USB stick and one external hard drive back in, I now hang on the screen I was on in my original post - which is just the grey screen with the loading icon. If these drives aren't connected, it won't proceed to this screen.

What has me thinking now is that the internal drive is corrupted or damaged, but I have no idea how this would happen since it isn't frequently used and showed no signs of problems on the last use. Is there any other troubleshooting I should do to check
on any of this?

Sorry to hear it. Even though you don't use the internal drive itself it is used for updates and could still be damaged or corrupted. If the console hangs on the start screen even when nothing else is attached then the console may be in need of a repair.

I have a hard time justifying a $79 RMA on a device that's barely worth $100, especially since there's no guarantee that the data would remain intact.

If, as you said, you didn't use the internal flash drive then there is nothing to worry about data wise. Of course, if you didn't want to spend that kind of money on a repair of the console you could consider purchasing a new one and take advantage of the
warranty that would come with it.

 

If the internal flash was dead, your console wouldn't boot up at all. Remove all controller, accessories, as well as disconnecting from your wireless networks (Turn off your router if you can). Just have your console, and your TV. Turn your console on via
power button. If your console still locks up, then it needs to be serviced/scrapped for $$$.

Does anyone have good ideas of ways to get some of the remaining data off the internal flash memory? I do have an IDE cage around somewhere that I could toss over to another external drive while I wait on what to do. Ultimately I will probably just wait
and see if the MS decides to do backwards compatibility with the games I play.

 

IDE...Compatibility may be an issue. The age of your IDE drive will also make it less then optimal for any storage. There's no way to retrieve data off of your internal flash. If your console doesn't boot up what so ever, then there's not much you can do.
Something you can try is try to stop your console from logging into your profile. Your profile may be corrupted and locking up the console. So after the boot logo, mash the Xbox button and try to cancel sign in, or sign into another profile.

 

I considered that possibility actually, but the prompt indicates there are 0 profiles associated with the console. The plus side is I think very few items were actually saved on the device. I think most of them were on the external devices, but I just
can't recall which ones.

I am toying with the idea of just letting the 360 die and getting a One, but I'd probably wait until I knew the games I play come out on them - otherwise there just isn't any point. I'm not an avid gamer by any means, and I usually don't play the ones everyone
waits in line for. I think the most "mainstream(?)" game I play is GTA 5. lol While I know it's out there for One, I guess I'm just kinda bummed on the thought that it's the only thing I'd be able to play while waiting for the rest to get released.

*sigh* So bottom line what I'm gathering from the replies here is that the surefire cause is something inside, but it could be a multitude of things inside, right?

 

Honestly, it could be anything. Considering the console boots and fails to load the dashboard, there are only a few things. The first things that the dashboard loads on boot up is your profile(s). They're all enumerated and then one is loaded if it is set
to auto-login. The console also connects to the internet, either via WiFi or Ethernet cable. Then the dashboard loads the general..dashboard. It could be any of those things. You can't do anything for any of these other than controlling whether or not it connects
to the internet, or attempting to stop it from logging into a corrupted profile. Unfortunately it seems like Microsoft fails to put in any fail safes for when something with the dashboard goes wrong. Shoddy programming on their part, but there's unfortunately
nothing that can be done. If it was hardware related, it's unlikely that your console would freeze in the same spot every time, and it wouldn't even finish POSTing during the logo.
