Dark Souls 2 Summoning

Summoning has changed from Dark Souls to Dark Souls 2. Now, it is not just level based, but also based on your Soul Memory.

I believe that every single soul you ever gain goes into your soul memory. So, if you sit in an area and help people with the boss, you may find that you "soul memory" yourself out of the summoning range for that area even if you don't level up. Gone are
the days when you can just make a character that helps people in specific spots it seems.

It is a Dark Souls forum. Since there was no official Dark Souls 2 forum, people started using this one for Dark Souls 2 as well.

That's a real shame. It looks like we have the low level greifers to blame for that one.

 

I think the goal was to give the middle finger to farmers instead of stopping people from welcoming noobs to Dark Souls.

 

How does that make any sense? People can still sit there and farm as much as they want. The change involving that was to have enemies no longer re-spawn if you die too many times in an area.

It also may have been the people who sat in the beginning areas and dropped uber weapons for noobs or just ran through and killed everything for them. I'm not sad to see either group go, but I am sad about not being able to be summoned more than a certain
amount of times before you're basically un-summonable for the rest of the game. I have no idea how one would level up in the covenants that require you to be summoned hundreds of times.

 

Death is not a factor. Enemies will begin to despawn if you kill them too many times. I've sat in Bastille farming mummified undead for machete drops until they all despawned.

Looking back, I'm not totally sure how I drew a connection between summon ranges and From's crusade against farmers. May have been drunk. Oh well.

 

I suppose, upon further reflection, this could be a measure against people getting summoned in order to gain too many souls.

 

On that same page, that is in the first post it says that "Soul Memory is irrelevant in NG+" So that doesn't seem like too much of a problem.

 

If you're in NG+ it may not be a problem. What does that mean though?

If someone stays a low level and beats the game, can they grief others since they are in NG+ and soul memory no longer counts? Do both people need to be in NG+? If you want to help people, are you forced to go into NG+ in order to do so?

 

If you're in NG+, you can only invade those in NG+ or above.

Doesn't even matter since pvp is completely borked.

Not sure about co-op, though.

 

Co-op has been working great. I stayed at lvl 170 and I always get summoned at the bosses that people seem to need the most help on. (Smelter, Dual Pursuer, Chariot dude, and some others.)

PVP on the other hand is almost nonexistent. My character has around 60 ish hours and I have been invaded 2 times.

 

From what I understand, the invasion covenant was nuked as well. There is no way to permanently invade, and you can only get cracked red eye orbs by winning duels with other players in the arena.

Looks like the casuals won. They got their endless co-op without fear of invasions.

 

IMO they should have made the normal infinite "eye orbs" (blue and red) from DS1 the level 3 reward for the respective covenants. At least that way we would eventually see a rise in the invasions and since it would be the level 3 reward it would help keep
the low levels safe from invasion for a time.
