    So long story but due to a disabling chronic injury I was soaking my leg and dropped my elite controller into the water(oof). Ordinarily I would have just bit the bullet and bought a replacement but found myself laid off during the pandemic. Luckily I'm fairly technically competent so I got to work tearing down the controller (after letting it dry and testing it to find out it was all wonky).

    Original problems: would only occasionally power on. Xbox button would act as if it was long pressed despite popping right back up. Controller would shut off randomly after 20 or so seconds.

    So I tore it down, carefully. Ensured there was no visible damage, removed any corrosion I could find, ensured all the connections were still making good contact. Took out the internal battery pack and tested the voltage (3.78 or thereabouts which should be correct for that battery yes? ), all the usual stuff. Even had to re solder the rumble motors as they popped off the board

    Well now I'm at a point where as long as the controller is on the charging dock it will turn on. The Xbox button works correctly, and every other button seems to work correctly. However as soon as I take it off the dock it turns off. It will not turn on when off the dock. It will also function with the USB cable plugged in. However we all know how USB cables can be and if it wiggles the wrong way it comes disconnected andthe controller shuts off.

    So I'm thinking it's the battery that's the issue? That seems odd given that the voltage tests right at the listed nominal voltage of the battery.

    Any good sources for a replacement one? All the ones I can find online are through ebay or other sites and outrageously expensive (best I've found is 25$ which is okay...... as long as I know it will fix the problem)

    Thoughts? Suggestions? I knew this was a long shot when I started it but I've gotten so close I'd hate to give up now. Especially since I'm not yet in a place financially to replace it.... and it's bumming my son out because I can't join his minecraft games or the other games he likes.

    Microsoft knew the controllers were defective and still sold them as a good product. they wont do anything to fix your controller because its most like out of warranty thats why the warranty was so short. The whole elite series 2 was a scam

    Taking the faceplate off your Elite Series 2 Core controller should not void your Microsoft warranty, as long as you don't damage the controller in the process. However, it's worth noting that any damage caused to the controller during the disassembly process or any signs of tampering with the controller could potentially void your warranty. Furthermore, any modifications or repairs you make to the controller on your own may be excluded from the warranty.
