  1. Damaged discs or bad dvd drive

I thought I'd ask because you guys have a lot more experience than I do. I bought a used XBOX 360 (original), as well as a bunch of used games. So far, of the 7 games I've tried, 4 of them have problems. Either I just get an 'unreadable disc' error, or
the graphics are jerky. I've tried polishing/buffing a couple of the discs, but it hasn't helped. There surfaces of the discs don't seem too bad - no worse than the discs that play fine. I've played a few movies, and they've been fine.

I just moved to a new place and don't know anyone else around with an XBOX, so I can't try the games in a different console. I don't know of any stores in the area that can do CD repairs. What I'm wondering is, how often do discs fail vs. how often does
the drive fail? I've seen quite a few resources on the web about replacing the drive, but I'd rather not spend the money if it's not going to help. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

    :)

  2. Xbox 360 (original version) DVD disc reading sound

If your discs don't get damaged it may be an issue with your consoles DVD drive motor bearings. The reason why it doesn't make the same sound when you play games is because game discs read much faster than DVD movie discs, which causes the discs to spin
    more.

Takes a long time to read discs...

The cheap and easy start is to use a DVD cleaner disc to try to clean the disc drive lense. Other than that It could be a damaged or mis-aligned laser in the drive that is VERY tricky to fix. If the cleaner disc won't work just swap out the drive.

The second hand consoles or used discs will always cause you issues for there is no way in knowing how the previous owner treated the console in question. Anyway if you can use the other 3 discs normally and only the other 4 cause problems, you should check
these discs for eventual damages (scratches or smudges) for that might be the cause of this issue.

    Disc drive damaging DVDs

    Hi, thanks for the replies.

It's scratched discs in both the upright and horizontal position, but its also just scratched a disc while I was watching it - I made it through to the credits and then it started juddering and freezing.

I've not had it scratch a game disc yet, only DVDs.

    Hello again Ackter,

I've thought more about this. You mention that only your DVD's are getting scratched. And by that, enough scratching to damage the disc's operability. I would like to ask you if your Xbox 360 is located near any of your TV's speakers, especially your
Bass speaker. It would make sense to me that if your game discs are not getting scratched, that something is being introduced when you're watching movies. I really think this may have to do with being a vibration issue. I also speculated that it may have
to do with the thickness of certain DVD's.

Does any of this seem like it may be feasible to you?

Also along with what MattKV said, you could also turn on Auto-Off, located in the System settings. It can give you the option to automatically shut off the console after 1 hour of inactivity.
