Customer support is a joke.

I attempted to change my gamer tag for the first time ever (I've been on since the original XB) but was prompted to pay to do so. When I contacted MS via live chat the guy first tried to lie and say the policy is that you are "free to change it once" but
still have to pay rather than what it says on THIS website "you can change it once for free". Having never before changed it, why do I have to pay $10 +Tax? Ultimately he said we all have to just go along with "the system" and while "it isn't easy" I have
to "just accept it.". I asked if there is some explanation, a record of a past gamer tag change from over a decade ago that I'd forgotten, something beyond "the system knows" but he offered nothing and stated he'd done all he could on his end. Just plain ridiculous.

The first one was selectively true. If the content never worked then they might be able to do a refund. Accidently buying the wrong thing isn't covered by the limited refund possibility.

Sounds like the first person was being lazy instead of giving more information about possibilities.

On topic: The rule is that all marketplace purchases are non-refundable (clearly stated in all marketplace item descriptions). Occasionally, phone support will make exceptions, and they are your only possible route for a refund.

 

The free change is only available if you were given a randomly generated tag and not one of your choosing. Since you have a gamertag you chose, you've technically already used your free change.

 

Huh... good to know, wish that was more clearly stated on the page, would have saved me a lot of time being angry about it. Oh well. Thanks for the clarification.
