  1. Crazy data use while on a cap

I'm on a fixed data volume due to services being over LTE and my Xbox One S is killing me for 5-40 gb per day. I've been in touch with an expert who recommended 'energy saver' mode to reduce the amount of time that downloads can be installed but its not
    producing any positive results.

What are the settings or tools that I can use to allow the Xbox to function but minimize the downloads? We don't play any community games that require true online activity during play, I don't suppose they would draw this much data anyway.

Is Xbox Live the main culprit? What can I do to control what Xbox Live does? Is this where the game and console updates are pulled?

Also, am I paying the penalty for having a lot of games installed that may be constantly updating themselves?

    Any help is welcome, thanks.

    :)

  2. Xbox One Data Usage (single player)

I have a data Cap of 20 GB, that being said, i was wondering why playing any game on single player While connected to Xbox live uses so much data? i did the bandwidth usage check and in about 4-5 Hours of Single player i had used 1.5GB of data. PLEASE NOTE:
i do not press the guide button to browse or check my friend list, i use my mobile phone app Smart glass for this. Also no automatic downloads are on. Whats making my ONE consume so much data while not even using any online functions rather than simply being
connected to Xbox live? The 360 Does not gobble any data while on single player.

    Hey there BatmanFishes14,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about the issue you may be experiencing with data volume on the Xbox One S.

    • Do you have an Xbox Live Subscription?
    • Do you play multiplayer matches online?
    • What type of gameplay do you do? (Campaigns, Story Mode, Multiplayer, Battle Royale)

The Xbox One S console is set to connect to a wireless network unless you place it on an offline mode. Check out this troubleshooting articles:

Hope this helps. Let us know.

  5. Thanks for the reply:

    • Yes we have an Xbox live subscription
    • No multiplayer matches, not by intent anyway. There may be some data move on this but its not part of what we're actually using with intent.
    • Gameplay is mostly Minecraft, NHL 18, Forza Horizon 4, Unravel 2 at this point. The multiplayer, as mentioned, isn't really part of what we're up to.

Hey Batman thanks for keeping us in the loop!

As previously stated by XBF Crystal P give the Using Xbox One offline troubleshooter since it provides the information to set the console
to home and would allow it to work properly, however, it will not allow multiplayer to function since all of that is done through the internet. Also try to only connect it to the hotspot when the console is in use because if the console is set to Auto Update
it will constantly be looking for updates to games and console updates as well. Give it a shot and let us know if we can further assist in this or any other matter!

Indeed, we do have local services that offer 250 to 500 gb per month. But yes, 40 gb updates in a night aren't exactly compatible. Can you contact my son and let him know he can't play xbox? Crazy data use while on a cap :).

  9. Hey there,

    Thanks for the reply!

Try using the console offline. Just note the console does go through updates that are crucial for the operating system and firmware.

I believe Minecraft has behind the scenes data transferring back and forth and I know Forza Horizon 4 always puts you in multiplayer unless you quit to solo mode (Might be an option to do that manually, not sure right now). FH4 also just had a patch which
was a couple gigs in size. There's also day one patches which are multiple gigs in size - it all adds up.

In your original post, you mentioned using energy saving mode - you're not going to want to do that. That mode, which I believe is analogous to Instant On mode will allow the console to download updates in the background. You're going to want the mode
that's completely off. It'll mean it takes longer for the console to boot up, but you'll have control at least.

One other thing to check - I believe you can see the actual bandwidth the console has used under settings ( ‘All settings’, ‘Network’, ‘Network settings’, then ‘Bandwidth usage’ under ‘Troubleshooting'
I think - I can't access my console right now to check).

    Hello There.

Basically Xbox is using data all the way it is online.

You should try to use your XBox offline. It is best solution.

  12. Goto your network settings and check the bandwidth useage. It will tell you whats been uploaded and downloaded

Game updates CAN AND WILL destroy your data cap. The console may also run updates for itself in the background. To be very honest, and please don't take this the wrong way, a capped data plan is really not a good choice especially when you have a gaming
console. Is there any chance of changing your data plan? Even reducing updates, you will still easily go over your data cap.

  14. Not really, the only decent internet available is LTE based, but I have upgraded it to 500 gb a month. Basically, I've taken all the suggestions:

    1. Energy Saver mode - although I'm not certain this will do much other than annoy me that startup is slow

    2. Unclicked 'keep xbox up to date automatically' or something like that

    3. Unclicked 'Update games automatically' or something like that.

    4. I'll leave it online, but I've blocked it at my router for all but two hours per day, if something critical needs to come through hopefully it will.

At the end of the month if I have data volume left over I'll let it run wild for a couple days.

The other hilarious thing is that some of the data volume that's been pulled down is going nowhere, the xbox os hasn't updated successfully in the last 15 days (Since Oct 11th). Now I'll have to go and figure out that error code...

  15. Thanks, Forza Horizon 4 does generally ask you if you want to go solo or online for events where that's an option. However, it does look to the internet from time to time based on it complaining when my wifi was crappy.

Where can I see the update schedules and volumes posted online? I'm curious to see what the size and frequency of game and console updates are. My xbox is stumbling on an update and hasn't successfully updated since Oct 11th so I have an error code to
digest. I think this has caused it to redownload updates over and over again...
