Thanks GZA, when set to uncompressed 5.1, the only setting that can be done on the Denon is multi-channel, multi-channel stereo, Stereo, mono movie, virtual, Direct, Direct Pure. if i set the hdmi output to stereo uncompressed, i get the choices of PL II,
NEO,THX Movie ...

never tried though the direct or direct pure, i do not know if these are good for movie.

Hey GZA, thank you for the good detail. I actually use (and love) Onkyo myself and allow the Xbox to send out 7.1 uncompressed. But you also mentioned the multichannel PCM being set to all channel stereo (perhaps by default). Indeed, that is what mine is
doing. I have played around with different listening modes but never really felt like one stood out as a clear winner in terms of a general setting. I'm curious what you have yours set at? I definitely see all the appropriate channels engaged with my all channel
stereo setting, and it does indicate Audyssey and DynamicEQ are enabled. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but is that a good place to be, or should I be trying something else?

You definitely don't want to set it to all channel stereo because that is not discrete surround sound. I usually use THX Cinema or THX Games mode. You could also try the Multichannel or Direct (no processing) modes.

Yes I'm getting crackle since I updated my controller. It is the xbox especially at low volumes. Sound with headphones goes in and out. The adapter barely works

I am running from optical to a 5.1 vizio sound bar. When I have it on dts it is fine, but on Dolby I get lots of crackling...

same issue. Also vizio sound bar. no problems with DTS or stereo

well the sound before it starts cracking is louder and the dialog and distribution between sub woofer, central speaker and surrounds is much crisper.

not sure what setting from the Xbox one we can change, and on the AVR, everything is quite automatic thanks to a process called odyssey on Denon X4000.

so not much i can do.
