Could Xbox one offer an HDR to SDR converter feature?

Hello, It would be cool, to have an HDR to SDR converter, I don't know if it has to be done through hardware or software tho. But there is this french guy who has been trying his Samsung UHD Blu-ray that got this feature, and he has been trying on numerous
LCD panel, HDR compliant one, non HDR compliant, and even 1080 screen, and he said that, with LCD screen with local dimming, he was able to obtain great result in contrast. I still don't know how much it could add to input lag, and I guess it will be less
if it's hardware made, but that will be definitely a great feature for the ones not ready to invest yet in 4k, especially how complicated is this niche, with things like hdmi 2.0 and 2.1 coming.

The most stupid one being HDCP 2.2 compliance, blocking you from viewing UHD content, if both (transmitter/receiver) your device arent HDCP 2.2 compliant, almost forcing average buyer getting product from hacker on peer to peer site, if he doesn't want upgrade
his TV/Monitor. There will be some work around, but the simplest will be using peer to peer torrent. This norm is just resulting in complete opposite of what it's supposed to do.

Anyway, even if in case of software made, it could put too much lag input, it will still be fine for watching movies.

    :)

GameDVR's 4k HDR is the wrong Pixel Format

If you record a clip in 4k HDR and try to upload it directly to YouTube it looks horrible, but still reports its an HDR video.
    (Raw Upload)

I did find that I can use ffmpeg to convert the HDR to SDR [converted
    HDR to SDR
    ]

But I also looked online and found something about Ingesting metadata into the file for YouTube to recognize it as HDR... [YouTubeHDR/hdr_metadata]
    [It still looks like Test1]

I tried that and I did indeed Got this message so it must be something that isn't being set correct when the Xbox is creating the files?

I just recorded two clips, one in HDR and one in SDR. It does show its BT.2020
    Imgur

I did check with ffmpeg and it shows a 4k HDR BluRay as:

    Video: hevc (Main 10), yuv420p10le(tv, bt2020nc/bt2020/smpte2084)

    and the xbox as

    Video: hevc (Main) (hev1 / 0x31766568), yuv420p(tv, bt2020nc/bt2020/smpte2084)

And if you remember the message YouTube told me when I uploaded about the pixel format.. I see the yuv420p10le on the real HDR video, and only yuv420p on the Xbox one?

Just used ffmpeg to render the pixel format as the yuv420p10le, and then added the Ingest metadata and it seems like it works!

Xbox Oe X Scorpio HDR Washed Out

Take a look at this :

"Xbox One X als UHD Blu-ray Player: SDR besser als HDR?"
    in youtube

I have the exact same problem with HDR.

Moreover, in games, I see no differences with the HDR feature activated or deactivated

A converter that converts HDR signals to... SDR (non-HDR)? That's the first I've heard of such a concept.

I recommend you take this idea to Xbox Ideas, powered by UserVoice to see if it gains any traction with votes. That's the place to go whenever someone has a suggestion for new products or improvements to existing products
of Microsoft. When an idea gets enough votes, it will get the attention of Microsoft for their official consideration.

  5. A monitor display from whitest white to blackest black - always.

So everything is mapped into this space.

HDR software I use for photo do this tone mapping and it is in reality a compression of exposure so that greater visibility in all areas of an image.

Our eyes usually adapt to one spot at a time viewing an image - doing this adjustment - but since a monitor does not know where we look it does the full image.

So 10-bit color depth pretty much allow smoother gradients for extreme lighting conditions.

Camera sensors are linear - so doing photo HDR makes a difference - having different exposure in different parts of an image.

Game graphics engines can pretty much create whatever they want - up to devs how it looks. I don't see the magic for games.

Manufacturors market these new things to make us buy new stuff. 3D, HDR and whatnot.

And if out of ideas - we make more pixels - must be better, right?

well it could be for game , but I was more thinking about 4k content (video, movies, Netflix) rather than 4k gaming, as video processing means more input lag for games, unless you got 4times more cpu-gpu than needed, but it's rarely the case in console.

  8. Could Xbox one offer an HDR to SDR converter feature?

Check out for real what bitrates Netflix offer and recommended internet connection in turn - it will tell a lot about if any boost in real life over full hd.

I heard somebody at Playstation forum last fall that had to pay extra for UHD - maybe it has been running a while now.

Video is lossy compression - so difference to full hd will be much less than talking pixels and monitors.

When installing games fron game disk on launch Xbox it runs roughly 2-3 MB/s in the range 20 Mbps over internet that would be.

That is the speed the drive can handle on Xbox as a system.

A DVD can handle AVCHD in full hd in max 18 Mbps, a bluray drive itself around 40-80 Mbs.

So UHD one wonders if it can do 100-150 Mbps if to compare bitrate seriously higher to make a viewing difference.

It's pointless if you go up to UHD resolution and don't getting that much higher bitrate compared to full hd.

The lossy compression will destroy image more than extra UHD pixels will improve.

Forget removing HDR because will do even more damage. Decompressing H264 or H265 first, and then reduce 10 bits color to 8 and then compress lossy again.

Those having Xbox One S would be interesting to hear what real life transfer from UHD disk can be?

Installing a 30 - 40 GB game - how long does it take?
