Could the Xbox one x deliver 1080p@120Hz with a patch?

hello I was wondering if, like the Xbox one x can deliver 4k@60fps, if the engine clock is able then to allow lower resolution (1080p &1440p) at higher frame per second? I got theses two monitors Samsung 32’curved cf391 with freesync over HDMI, the Samsung
28’ ue590d 4k@60hz with HDMI 2.0 (unfortunately with no hdcp2.0 compatibility, so unusable with Netflix 4k on my actual one S). I don’t have the one X yet, but should get it at the end of the month, so I could check on which monitor I prefer it, because I
rather like more 32’ curved over a flat 28’, and I’m thinking about selling both of them to get the samsung 32’ curved chg70 144Hz @1440p with hcp2.0 hdmi2.1 and quantum dot technology. It also got hdr, but apparently it’s not a great deal as it got only 8
dimming zone, and gives a washed out impression.

So anyway it will be great if the Xbox one X could possibly and physically deliver higher fps on lower resolution. If, someone, somewhat technical, could explain if that is even possible, that would be great.

And by the way I’m kind of already way happy, that Xbox one x gave support to 1440p, it is such a great news cos I have been hesitating a long time between 4k and 1440p, I will go back to 4k at some point when price will drop down, and when better hdr be
    available for the money.

    :)

  2. Error on xb1x selecting 4k

The Xbox One X supports 120hz only at 1440p and 1080p resolutions. It does not support 120hz at 4k. So unless your TV or monitor supports 1440p resolution (many don't), you will only get 1080p when selecting 120hz.

HDMI 1.4 could technically drive 1920x1080@120Hz (and that’s been on the original Xbox One), but it doesn’t seem like any game/app developer is targeting 120FPS at all. Everyone is shooting for 60FPS right now, which proves to already be a challenge on consoles.

Support for 1440p was confirmed by a Microsoft exec not too long ago, but with absolutely no information on
when it will be implemented at all (except for a vague “coming soon”).

Any resolution/performance compromises would have to be implemented by the individual game or app developer as a setting or option.

Technically yes but as has been stated no-one makes any console content that takes advantage of it. Plus there is the fact that as a console with PC characteristics the XB1X lacks the one of the most important features for PC gaming which is Displayport
output, something so minor it would have cost them nothing to include but they overlooked.

All of the high end stuff on PC is done through Displayport, the interface is more advanced and forward looking than HDMI which doles out updates every few years so TV makers have something new to sell.

I wouldn't expect 1440p output to be anything more than downscaled 2160p output, not native rendering.

The variable refresh range most likely to be usable with the XB1X is in the 30-70Hz spectrum as games target 30fps or the few 60fps, of course MS have not enabled Freesync and said nothing about it since, in fact they may never enable it. At CES 2018 Samsung
was demoing Gears 4 on HDMI VRR TV's (HDMI 2.0 with VRR bolted on), it may be MS will not support Freesync over HDMI and only support HDMI groups VRR.

So buying a monitor based on Freesync is a huge risk, go for something with 4K, HDCP2.2 and optionally Vesa DisplayHDR 600 which is average HDR, real HDR on PC monitors will be DisplayHDR 1000 rated.

Apparently they tweeted that 1440p native is on its way

I agree that displayport port should have been added, but it will have added to the cost, maybe in future gen it might be added, to get less hassles with connection and new technology. Tho HDMI 2.1 has been made quite future proof for the years to come,
and AMD works with HDMI now anyway, implementing FreeSync through it as they have done with xbox one x, and on some of their new components.

Maybe monitor/TV industry take advantage of the new port technology, but its not really up to them. I think HDMI, HDCP, Displayport, USB should agree on a 2years windows to reveal, at the same date, new products, so the tv industry, dont have to create a
new products every six months to get all the new gadgets. Cos it's up to them to put this industry in a chaotic maelstrom.

HDCP being the most ridiculous of all of them, I dont understand that no complaint has been brought to them from the whole media industry. Cos a lot of passionate aficionado are upset with it. Especially when intel complaint about the fury device which was
nonetheless a very expensive solution to the lack of intel professionalism and competence.

    Error on xb1x selecting 4k

The Xbox One X supports 120hz only at 1440p and 1080p resolutions. It does not support 120hz at 4k. So unless your TV or monitor supports 1440p resolution (many don't), you will only get 1080p when selecting 120hz.

    120Hz at 1440p

For the Xbox one X you have to choose one or the other reguardless of the monitors specs. Either 1080p at 120hz or 1440p at 60hz. The Series X thats coming in November will support 4k at 120hz at the same time. 👍
