Controllers break while playing NBA 2k16

While playing NBA2k16 with 3 controllers connected, the player one controller suddenly stops working at 2:00 exactly during the 2nd quarter. 100% reproduction we can't get past the 2:00 2nd quarter mark without player1 losing control of his character.
The controller is still connected, but the only button that works is the big middle xbox button. Once at the Xbox home screen out of the game the controller works fine again as if nothing is broken. It's only happening to the player one controller signed onto
a love account, other two controllers are playing as guests and work fine. Only other game I've played is Fallout4 and no controller problems while playing that, but NBA2k16 is the first multiplayer game we've tried. This is really disappointing as it feels
like we've spent over 600 dollars for Xbox one and accessories and can't even play together for more than 10 minutes before the controller stops working in game...

Edit: We are losing functionality in all controllers at random times in the game after reinstalling. When the issue "triggers" one controller becomes completely useless, but can still use the home button and regains all functionality in the home menu. Second
controller loses the ability to sprint (r trigger) and rebound on offense (y button), but can still rebound on defense (y button). Third controller loses the ability to set screens (b button), but can still take charges (b button on defense). It is always
these 3 problems, complete failure happening on player one, loss of sprint and rebound on player 2, and loss of screening player 3. Reinstalling the game changes when the problem happens during the game (used to be at 2:00 2nd quarter, now at 4:00 3rd quarter.
Played 3 games on the new install and it's broken at 4:00 3rd quarter every time, same problems on same controllers.

Power down your console, then unplug the power cable from the back of the Xbox One. Wait for two minutes, then plug the power cable back into the back of the Xbox One, and monitor the power brick, waiting for it to cycle from a white light to an orange
light, and then turn the power on. This will perform a cold restart of the system.
