Controller won't connect/Can't hear people

I know several people that go on the Xbox app on their phone and change remote control to their phone and then change back to controller and have no issues. I changed mine back to my controller and now my controller won't connect no matter what I try.
I've hard re set it several times, unplugged it from all ports, deleted my profile and re downloaded and the only way the controller has worked is when the Xbox randomly shut itself off turned itself back on shut itself off 2 more times and as soon as it stayed
on I tried the controller and it worked but i couldn't hear anyone but could see they were talking. After getting back on a few hours later the same thing happened controller won't connect, i was back to square one. This has been an on going nightmare for
4 days now. I never had any issues prior to using the app and changing remote to my phone.

It could be that the volume slider on the guide is on the game and not the party

Thank you for replying! I have checked all my settings several times I didn't have any issues until I changed my remote control to my phone on the Xbox app. After i switched back to controller to hop on a game is when it all went down hill. Won't recognize
I have a controller even though I have used the same one for a year, never had any issues hearing people before either. It looks like going from remote control on my phone messed something up even though I switched it back to controller

I also forgot to add that it won't connect to any other devices. My kinect won't turn on, my controller can't connect to the Xbox and I can't connect via Smart glass

I can't update the controller, as I stated in the question the problem is the controller won't connect so I can't get to the update page

I have 0 controllers connected to my Xbox because I can't connect any. It isn't just my one controller that won't connect, none of my 4 controllers will.
