Controller Unresponsive On Update Screen

Hello,

My Xbox One S is asking me to update immediately after startup. On the update screen, which has 3 options ("Start Update", "Skip & Stay offline", "Turn off console"), I am able to use my controller to toggle between the three options but not able to select
any of them. I cannot tell if this is a problem with the box or my controller.

I have tried using my controller via both wired & wireless connections and the problem is consistent between both methods of connection.

When I press both triggers I am shown the following information;

On this screen, the close button is flashing as if it's being continuously toggled by someone moving the thumbstick really fast.

I am able to exit this screen with the "B" button.

The start button does not allow me to select any of the options.

Holding the guide button does bring up the usual "What do you want to do?" menu, but "close" is the only option that's allowed to be selected.

I am unable to turn on narrator as an alternative way of selecting one of the options.

I am unwilling to buying a new controller just to test if the "A" button on this one is broken.

Automatic updates are certainly going to be part of the future, but issues like this make me really miss my Xbox 360 even if it did have the red ring of death to contend with.

Still having this issue, xbox tech support somehow sent me here to ask for help but it doesnt seem like anyone is having their questions answered. @microsoft can i tag you to get your attention

I've had to do 2. The first for an unresponsive controller. The second was in relation to the Update preview.

Yep me too. First it told me it couldn't retrieve the update, so of course I tried to turn it off and on again. Now I have a black screen that only lets me turn off the xbox or turn off the controller. And support is unresponsive.

I have almost the same Issue on the standard Xbox one ever since the last update crashing freezing glitching having to power cycle as Xbox becomes unresponsive to controller.

notice sometimes if you hold home button and select turn off Xbox it locks up and wont shut down turn on or anything just the turn off controller or Xbox screen stuck and unresponsive end up power cycling think up to my 20th power cycle sinse the update
grrrrrr.

I've had time to just allow the Xbox to sit on the dashboard, unresponsive. to the controller.

It eventually shows me the below screen and the controller then works, but I'm not getting anywhere resolving the issue.

Trying again has failed multiple times. Checking the network doesn't do anything. Skip and stay offline takes me to the dashboard where the screen dims again and becomes unresponsive again. Turn off isn't a solution. Turning back on just restarts the
cycle of dim screen and unresponsive dashboard.

Holding both triggers and bumpers shows me this screen:

I've tried searching those error codes, but the MS Xbox One error code help search states those codes do not exist.
