Controller only works when holding the power button.

I was playing with my own controller at a friend's house the other day and everything was going fine. Suddenly my controller shuts off and when i press the button to turn it back on, the light comes on for an instant behind the "home" (power) button before
turning off. I replaced my charge pack with full batteries thinking it was an issue there and the same thing happened. My friend had a kindle cable that happens to fit the controller, and while plugged in, the controller behaves normally, so we just plugged
it into the xbox one and I sat close to the TV for the rest of the game. After taking it home I've made some observations, the controller turns on and will stay on (inlcuding navigating through the menu, etc.) if and only if I hold the "home" (power) button,
the entire time. The moment I pull my thumb off the button, the controller instantly turns off. It's fairly bizarre since the controller MUST be getting power, and yet it seems to require a cable or me holding down the power button. Seeing as my xbox one didn't
come with a cable to connect to the xbox one. I cant even temporarily fix this problem. Any advice or familiarity with this problem?

Xbox One Problems Binding Controller still happening after recommended fixes.

When I power up my Xbox One console sometimes it will not bind my controller properly. The weird thing is the problem occurs about half of the time i power up, the other half it'll work fine. The only fix i've found is to plug in my micro usb cable that
came with the console to the controller or my plug and play charger which I purchased additionally. Pressing the binding buttons of the controller and console don't seem to do anything.

I've tried the various combinations of powering up my console:

1) Holding down the button on my controller both sitting in front of the kinect and away from it.

2) "Xbox on" both in front of kinect w/ controller and away from kinect.

3) Hitting the power button on the console both in front and away from kinect.

4) I've even had it fail when holding the controller directly in front of the kinect sensor and pressing the controller power button.

Just to reiterate the problem occurs about half the time, I haven't been able to consistently replicate results in either direction.

If your console was in instant on using the button on the controller does not turn the console off. It puts it in standby. The only way to truly restart the console is by holding the power button until the controller turns off.

 

not really but my guess is that your controller has some issue with the batterys. tro to get some padding between the batteries and the casing could be that your batteryes are losing connection causing that issue.

while you have the controller plugged with a microusb cable to the xbox it will act as a wired controller getting its power from the console, thats why it worked at your friend's place.

IF anything else you should replace that controller.

 

I have the exact same issue after accidentally dropping it on hard wood floor. Stays on only when holding the power button but turns immediately off when let go. Changed the batteries but only works when plugged in. Another weird note is when trying to update
the firmware, it does not recognize a controller is even plugged in, even when swapping the cables. I am at a lost.
