Controller is connected and working but i cannot use it in fortnite

Thank you for your detailed response and for your patience when it comes to troubleshooting a solution. Are you currently using a Playstation or Xbox controller? Is it an Xbox One controller or an Xbox 360 controller?

If by chance you're using an Xbox controller, please follow the PC controller updates found here: Update Your Xbox Controller on PC
Specifically review the drop down focused on PC updates. This will prompt you to download the Xbox Accessories Application.

While browsing for other troubleshooting fixes, I noticed that this is happening with several PC Fortnite players. It's possible that a recent update may be causing this error to occur. If the troubleshooting fix mentioned above does not resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to contact Epic directly through their support channel: Epic Games Support

Update: ive now tried unistall/installing fortnite, disconnecting/ reconnecting my controllers, running the game through steam, and turning the controller on before loading the game, nothing has worked. This is crazy annoying

Thank you once again for the details. Unfortunately, it is possible that it is a hardware issue directly with the Fortnite game client or for the PlayStation controller itself. I would recommend attempting to use the PlayStation controller again once the new Fortnite updates become available on December 4th or December 5th depending on your region. If the issue persists, I would recommend connecting with Epic Games and file a bug report at: Fortnite Bug Report. You are also welcome to reconnect back on these forums with a new thread if your controller is still not operating correctly after the upcoming Fortnite update.

Thank you for contacting the Xbox Support forums. I understand that your controller is not working while attempting to play Fortnite. If this is a recent error, it’s possible that a recent PC or Fortnite update has altered your settings. Please attempt the following;

1. View your Fortnite settings
   
2. Select the mouse and keyboard icon
   
3. Scroll down until you see “Ignore Gamepad Input”, then select “Off” and apply the new settings
   

If this does not fix the error, can you please confirm if other game titles on PC are working with your controller?
