    Controller input not limited to Xbox app when using cloud gaming


    My issue is that sometime after I start a cloud gaming session, my controller does not seem to have its input restricted to the gaming window. When I move the right joystick, the cursor reappears and moves around the screen. If moved to the bottom, the taskbar of my laptop appears. If I move it to the top, the Xbox cloud gaming settings appear. Pressing A causes a left click action. Normally, revealing the cursor and clicking on things outside the app would only happen if I put down my controller and switched to using my mouse or trackpad.

    Previously, this happened irregularly, and primarily on startup. I would boot the game, and trying to move the joystick immediately revealed that the controller was still being read as input outside the app. I never discerned a pattern to when this would happen and when it would boot cleanly. Occasionally this issue would happen in the middle of a gaming session for reasons I still don't understand, but this was rare. Usually, restarting the game, the Xbox app, or my computer resolved the issue. Recently, however, none of these solutions work, and the issue appears every time I try to start a session.

    I have experienced this issue when using both wired and wireless controllers attached through usb, and across multiple games, so I do not believe it is a controller- or game-specific issue.

    I would appreciate any advice on how to change any controller or input setup issues to resolve this problem.

    Upon isolating your concern this would appear that the issue only occurs during cloud gaming.
    As much as we would like to provide you troubleshooting for resolution since cloud gaming just got started there could be chances of improving the platform. We would appreciate if you send a feedback through feedback hub stating the information you have shared in here. Additionally, please send a report to Team Xbox for continuous improvement of cloud gaming. As you notice this will happen in the middle of a gaming session there could be possibility that an update can fix or else you will receive an answer from the team that specializes this area of matter.     For those with the same issue, I am about 90% sure that the problem was Steam. I found that ending all Steam instances from the task manager allowed me to re-boot the Xbox app and enter the cloud session without a problem. I have since changed Steam's settings to not automatically boot during startup meaning that it is never running in the background when I try to play games through Xbox, and the problem has not reappeared since.

    To better isolate your issue, we will be asking for few questions:

    1. Is the device, Xbox apps (Xbox app/Xbox Console Companion, Xbox Game Bar, Gaming Services and Xbox Accessories) and Xbox Controller are up-to-date?
    2. May we ask what type of controller are you using?
    3. Are you playing cloud games on a PC or Xbox console or mobile phone? Is there an attached mouse and keyboard?
    4. Do you have any antivirus, antimalware, VPN, Firewall and PC Optimizer? Please turn them off or disable them before playing a game.
    5. When did this issue happen? Was there a recent Windows update or new application installed on your device?
    6. Would you mind sharing any troubleshooting you have performed so far?

    1. Xbox app version 22112.1001.10.0, Gaming Services version 3.60.12001.0, Xbox Game Bar version 5.721.12013.0. Widows 11 Home OS build 22000.376, up to date according to my settings screen.
    2. This problem has occurred both for a wired Oussirro Wired Controller for Xbox 360, and for an official Xbox 360 wireless controller from Microsoft tethered using a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows.
    3. Playing cloud games on a laptop. There is an attached mouse but no attached keyboard.
    4. I have Avast antivirus, but turning it off does not affect the problem, and seems to be a bad solution anyway.
    5. This problem has occurred for approximately two months. There were no updates I noticed triggering this, and it has spanned Windows 10 and Windows 11.
    6. As I wrote in my original post, I have tried restarting my computer and the Xbox app, which have only worked occasionally, and with no discernible pattern.
