Controller drifts forward but only in-game

My controller will drift forward while I am playing games but not on the dashboard. If its drifting and I press the dashboard button it will stop drifting and when I go back to the game it is still not drifting even though I never touched the thumbstick
    to make it stop drifting.

    :)

    Xbox one controller failures

We have 3 X1 controllers drift forward between me and my son, all left stick drift forward. Pretty sure it's from playing games where sprint is assigned to the left stick. The army camo controller only lasted about a month. Strange thing is, my day one 2013
    controller is still fine.

Anyway, I use to get through 360 controllers at a similar rate, only difference was the left sticks drifted left on those.

    Controller Warranty?

My controller drifts forward and I was planning on sending it in but someone on reddit pointed out to me that my controller was out of warranty. I bought my Xbox One in January. Is it out of warranty?

It also doesn't drift all the time. It will drift after a second or two of not touching the thumbstick.

Hi there Atomix! Does that drifting issue only happen in a particular game, or have you noticed it in more than one? If so, which game(s) is/are affected? What have you tried so far to stop it from happening? Let us know! We'll be happy to help.

It has happened in Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, Trials Fusion, and Call of Duty: Ghosts. Those are the only games I have played since it has started happening.

I know Titanfall has a feature in its options to stop a controller from doing that....which makes me think controller drifting is common?....and dare I say, "normal?"

It isn't normal. I am not able to do hide in haystacks in Assassins Creed IV because I keep jumping out. So I highly doubt it is just something that happens all the time.

I just found out that if I go to the dashboard and then go back to the game it won't drift forward but if I press the dpad in any direction, it starts drifting again.

Thanks Atomix. Let's see if updating your controller will stop this from happening. We've made some improvements beyond headset compatibility. Please try the following:

    1. Make sure the console is on and you're signed in, connected to Xbox Live.
    2. Remove the batteries or Play & Charge pack from your controller.
    3. Connect the controller with a micro-USB cable: plug the USB end into the port on the side of the console, and then plug the micro end into the top of the controller.
    4. If the console doesn't automatically prompt you to update the controller, you can do it manually by navigating to Settings > System > Update Controller.
Once the update is complete, unplug your controller, replace the batteries, and power it on by pressing the controller's Xbox button. Please let us know if that helps!

    Hey Atomix,

Unfortunately, if you've tried all the steps in this thread with no success, it sounds like your controller may have developed a fault. I would recommend replacing your controller.
