Controller doesn't work only in games

First off, I'm hugely disappointed with the Xbox One. I've had nothing but issues with it since it was given to me as a gift from my mother-in-law. It was very kind of her but Microsoft blundered this from what I can tell.

That said, my issue: no button on my controller responds when in any game. This happens nearly every time I open a game. Some times restarting, opening closing the game, etc. seems to temporarily resolve the issue. On the Xbox dashboard itself everything
works fine. When I'm in a game, the only button that works is the home button on the controller. I've looked around and couldn't find this issue or a resolution.

Any ideas or is anyone aware of a solution? Thanks.

My Xbox has been nothing but frustration since I got it, doesn't make me really want to play it.

Thanks for the reply, but none of these are the issue I'm having. My controller works totally fine, unless I have a game running. Then only the home button responds. Maybe it's an issue with the games (but all the ones I have?).

Example: Controller is working completely fine. I launch Battlefield 4. No button on the controller now works. I hit the home button. I return to the dashboard and the controller once again works fine.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with your controller. That definitely sounds weird.

There are a couple of things that might get us a better picture on what's happening:

Is this happening in any game that you play?

Are they disc or digital games?

Have you tried using an app like Youtube or Xbox Video and seeing if the buttons work in those apps?

If you haven't already, I would also recommend that you make sure your controller is updated using these steps (please note you will need a micro USB cable to connect your controller to your console):

Make sure your console is on and you’re signed in and connected to Xbox Live.

Plug the big end of the USB cable into the port on the side of the console.

Plug the small end of the USB cable into the top of the controller.

Instructions to install the update should automatically be displayed. Follow the instructions, and don’t disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress.

(The process can take up to 3 minutes.)

When the update is complete, unplug the USB cable.

If you have additional controllers to update, you can connect them now, one at a time, select the Update another button on the screen, and then follow the steps.

Press the Xbox button on the wireless controller to turn it on.

According to your description, you can open my xbox with all your controllers, but when the home screen appears, my controller does nothing except turn off the screen. You also tried to update the controller on the Xbox.

You mean that after you turn on the Xbox console, you are on the Xbox home page. At this time, except for pressing the Xbox key, no other keys respond?

How did you update the Xbox controller on the Xbox console?

If you have a keyboard and mouse, plug them in and see if the Xbox is still within the control range.

And you can also test it on the PC to see if it works properly on the PC.

i have this problem in BF4 and the controller doesn't work randomly in game and sometimes in the dashboard... i must restart the xOne for resolving the problem. i use the controller only in usb without the battery. is there solution?
