recieved the following enforcement notification when my gamertag got changed to the silliness it is now.

"This account's Gamertag contained inappropriate content. This content may include profanity, sexual topics, hate speech, controversial religious topics, references to notorious people or organizations, sensitive current or historical events, or any content
designed to sound like, look like, reference, or allude to these topics. This account's Gamertag was issued a forced change. A new system-generated Gamertag was automatically assigned to this account, and the Gamertag that received enforcement will remain
unavailable. For more information, visit: https://enforcement.xbox.com/Home/StaySafe#topic9."

"My gamertag did not violate your terms of service. Please put it back. [Mod Removed]
has nothing to do with profanity, sex, hate speech, religion, any notorious person or organization, or any sensitive current or historical event, and can not rationally be construed as such."

My gamertag wasn't nice, but it wasn't offensive, it was pretty obviously a joke, but that's not what the problem is here, we can't contact enforcement, but enforcement can make arbitrary decisions that cost players money. This is not ok. I don't know if there's
any good resolution here, if [Mod Removed] are acceptable names, but
[Mod Removed]isn't... there's a problem, and my gamertag wasn't it.

And i would suggest asking for customer service, and they would have a better idea as to who to direct you to.

It's quite easy to see why it would be considered offensive even though you think it's a joke.

 

Content that could harm or harass a person, including yourself, or an animal. For example:

• Profane words or phrases
• Suicide-related content
• (Note: the examples below are just a few examples of the type of behavior prohibited by the Microsoft Code of Conduct. Just because something isn't on this list doesn't mean it's OK.)
  
• Negative speech (including hate speech or threats of harm) directed at people who belong to a group, including groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, language, gender, age, disability, veteran status, religion, or sexual orientation/expression
  
• "Noise", which is excessive speech intended to interfere with or disrupt another person's or group's ability to enjoy a game or app on Xbox Live
  
• Content showing or promoting animal abuse
  
• Content that is controversial. For example:
  • Sexual, provocative, pornographic, or adult content
  • Violent content
  • Controversial religious content
  • Anything involving notorious people or organizations

It's not the tag that's got me worked up, sure, I had it for the better part of the last decade and there was never a problem, I don't think the code of conduct was even extant when I generated my gamertag, but one person got offended and I have to get taxed
10 bucks to pick a new name that someone else could arbitrarily find offensive? What if I were named Joe and had gender and body image issues, that'd make the sterile tag they generated terribly offensive to me.

The real issue is the $10 fee to change the tag to something that doesn't make me look like I was named by a bot, with zero assurance that it won't arbitrarily happen again.

 

Part of the ToU you agreed to does tell you that if you are issued a forced name change then you will be given a random tag for free.

If you want to change your tag again then there will be a fee.

As a rule,gamertags must be rated "E" for everyone.

I can all but guarantee you that those terms were not in the ToS I agreed to when I created my tag 10 years ago.

If this is how microsoft community enforcement works, with actual enforcement administered totally arbitrarily and a "[Mod Removed]" model of case review, they might as well be telling us to buy consoles from Sony.
