    Constant internal HDD access noise. But everything is installed on external drive.


    Got every game I own installled on an external drive, but when playing I can hear a constant noise that sounds like HDD access from inside the console on the disc drive side.

    But it is a ryhtmical noise, not a random one. It definitely isn't the fan. But what is strange is that it doesn't always happen with all games. For example, with Forza Horizon it seems to stop and start. It also does it with no disc in the drive so isn't
    the disc drive either.

    It doesn't seem to sound like any youtube videos I have watched, but I have seen posts around the net where people seem to be describing the same thing. It's a white model by the way, and the posts I have seen also talk about the white model and even when
    they exchange the replacement is the same.

    Also got a day one console which is very quiet, but has its games installed on the internal drive. Thanks for any advice/help.

    Default setting for external HDD

    My console is currently set to download new content onto my external HDD. Is there an option to change that so new content is installed on the internal drive?

    Game downloads freeze, Xbox One X gets stuck

    Just to avoid unnecessary troubleshooting steps, I have an external HDD, but game updates for those on the external HD work fine. Downloads get stuck only when it comes to what is installed or being installed on the internal HDD. I also tried with the external
    HDD unplugged, same result.

    are your games installed to the internal drive or are they installed on an external drive, sounding like a hdd issue.

    Hi,

    are they installed on internal HDD?

    If not - Optimized games must be on internal drive, games for Xbox One can be run from external HDD.

    Sorry to hear you're having Difficulties installing, Do you have an internal and External HDD?

    I'm only asking as I had the exact same problem when I tried re-installing after I bought an external har drive

    if so set your internal HDD as the default drive for new to do this go to settings ->console -> Manage storage then set <internal hddname> as default install and hopefully this should work :)

    What if i did all my future installs on an External HDD instead? I would just like to replace the HDD internally myself, But Microsoft makes it incredibility difficult to format the drive to work Internally for some reason.
