Constant console updates - kicking me out of games etc.

As the title states, that.

I'll be midgame or something and poof. There I go. Black screen and my Xbox will start updating. No warning nothing. It's happening almost every day now. It even updates most of the time when I turn it on in the morning. Anyone know why it's doing this?
I can't find an option in settings to stop it doing that or to auto update when I'm offline. It's starting to get incredibly annoying.

3 in the past 2 weeks? For me it's been 12 out of 14 days Xbox needs an update, kicking me out of games, consider yourself lucky.

 

Hi, based on your experience I take it you are a preview member, as such there will be many system updates. You can if you wish opt out of the program which will stop the constant updates. However be aware that your Xbox will be reset to factory defaults
and the latest public system update will be installed, if you have any games/apps on the internal hard drive those will be wiped off.

 

How many is many? I'm sick of every other time I turn it on it's time to update. And the updates take forever. I'm ready to throw it out or sell it and switch to Nitendo.

 

The preview program means lots of updates as bugs are ironed out in stages and new bugs are found and fixed. There were daily updates a few weeks back which was I admit a bit of a pain but that's what to expect.

If it's such a hassle for you by all means opt out of the preview, throwing your Xbox out may void the warranty though

I agree with EggsBoxJuan, it does sound like your in the Preview Program. The amount of updates varies though recently I would say maybe twice a week or so. After a big public release you may not see an update for a while.

You can check the Xbox Preview Dashboard app announcements for if there is an update coming, at this point you can manually go into Settings app, System, and Console Info & Updates. From here you can start the update now rather than waiting until your in
game and this occurs. Or if you wish you can opt out of the program and your console will be wiped and reset.

That's ridiculous! You mean to tell me my options are to keep dealing with these stupid constant updates or wipe my hard drive clean?! Definitely will not be getting the new Xbox if that's the case.

Yes that is correct. This is the main purpose of the Preview Program so we can test the software and ensure no issues before public release (which we all agreed to). Like I mentioned in my previous post. You can go into Settings app and install it manually
so it doesn't pop-up while your gaming. If you have sleep mode enable on your console it usually updates when you turn your console off. Or you can opt out of the program it will do a restore, then you just have to install your games/apps over again.

 

I am in the preview and to add my 2 cents, it's far too many updates. Mine updates every other day. Had i known that there would be this many updates I would have never gotten into the whole preview program to begin with. It's also going to be a headache
to reset the entire console just to get out of the program.

 

Before you leave the program, can you add me into the Preview? Seriously. I'd like to be part of the preview.

But let me ask you..... do you have the machine set to auto-update (not the one where it's the energy saver, but the low power mode)? I'm curious if it will auto-update overnight if you leave it to.

Sure I can invite you! Regarding the auto updates while your Xbox is off, yes my console does this when I have Instant-on enabled with auto updates.

Alissa914 just a heads up the forums aren't the place to request invitations to the preview program i assume Fibre generously invited you as a courtesy. You will need to wait a while before actually getting accepted and depending on recent enforcement action
that may not work and you may not be accepted at all.

At the moment PkerJock isn't returning to the thread any time soon. If he / she does then they can follow the steps above to troubleshoot their issue.

 

As much as I like being a preview member I got to admit updates coming out of nowhere at the worst of times is very annoying. Why can't we get a 5 or 10 minute warning notification so if someone is in a middle of a game they at least have time to save and
quit then download it. My PC has this option so why doesn't the xbox?

 

So I'm a huge fan of update often and as soon as possible for Xbox and PC. I'm a developer myself. But having updates kick you out of games is a huge pain. I've got Xbox always on, so would expect updates could happen every day in standby. But instead,
I'm regularly getting updates while in the middle of using the console. It really makes no sense.
