  1. Consoles and Cultures

Disclaimer: this thread is not meant to be a comparison thread to start arguments over which console is better, so please don't start that nonsense; its only intention is to compare the cultural aspects and impact of each console and
    their respective (exclusive) games.

Naturally everybody knows that the Xbox consoles were made by Microsoft, which is an American company, and that the Playstation consoles were made by Sony, which is a Japanese company. Over the years, I have personally noticed the amount of games that have
come through on both sides that represent those respective cultures. One only needs to glance at their respective library of games and see that the Xbox largely reflects American culture while the Playstation largely reflects Japanese culture (although there
is certainly some crossover as well). My question to you is a simple one: do you think that the majority of (exclusive) games on each console represent the culture that designed the console or do you think it's more of an even spread between the 2 cultures?

Also, how do you think these 2 culture have influenced each of these consoles both positively and negatively in the past, as well as the present, and in the future to come?

I hope you guys make this an enlightening and long-lasting (as well as respectful) discussion where we can all learn a little something. Consoles and Cultures :)

    :)

    Xbox 360: dead in Japan?

Not a surprise. Japan is a complete different culture compared to the US. The 360 sells well in other counties such as the UK and much of Europe because the culture is somewhat similar to us Americans. Or Japan obviously has a bad taste in games and rather
worship a console that continues to fail.

Already have a few months that the enemies do not die, they shoot and shoot them, throw grenades falling at their feet and not die, because we shot only kills us. Something wrong in the software Halo 5 Guardians, or why would I have heard that if you register
on American soil gains a protection is that, as for those who are from other countries not. Uncle Sam likes to protect their children, all right, but it is called to protect a game where should be equal opponents, not protected, so missed the free throw, we
have no desire, to compete for that you never win and only lose , like playing cards and a player pulling a letter from the sleeve, it is something unfair and it's called stealing, right. Even said that each player has a level, so it is placed in an arena
with the same level opponents, but it is not what we have seen, you're up there, and put you at the police station beginners, there it is one and the best win for beginners are new, this is treachery or cowardice, take advantage and go to a competition putting
weak and strong only win, Roman arena type that put gladiators against lions. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk lost the desire to play Halo 5 Guardians.

    Atari ???? Anyone.....

There's maybe some culture aspects, but videogame is an hobby and a big business.

Previously Japan was "the place to be" but now most best sellers, games that becames iconic (COD,GTA,...) comes from North America and Europe.

One of the most played genre is FPS (not JRPG).

Even Japanese publishers bought some (US/EU) famous studios,Eidos,Crytals Dynamic,Naughty Dog,....

I'm still surprise not seeing any big FPS coming from Japan.Maybe a culture thing.

But from a business point of view, kind of weird.

But today "culture differences" in videogame between East and West,is mostly invisible.A big mix of influences where money reigns.

There was a time when Japanese devs made the best games, but the best devs now are definitely coming out of the West.

  6. Atari started it but never really had the same impact as Saga or Nintendo within the gaming industry. Capcom, Namco, and Konami still remain strong too with their franchises.

You can never write off Japan not now or for the future. Japanese developers still have a part to play .......Resident Evil....... Silent Hill....... MGS to name a few.

Maybe because when Atari started ,it wasn't an industry.

But Pacman is still an icon even outside the gaming world....

@GG.....some examples of games that made you observe this would be nice. Might make it a little easier to discus.

  9. I actually had plenty of examples listed mgzin, but only for the western side (since that's what I'm more knowledgeable with); I had a hard time thinking up exclusives from the east (although I could think of plenty of cross-platform games) and didn't want
to present what could potentially be considered a weak argument due to my lack of examples from one side. So, I figured I'd just let you guys list off the examples instead. Consoles and Cultures ;)

Ofc when atari was out it was an industry, just not like you know it as today, i spent many days at an arcade, people now look at an arcade machine as retro.

But thats down to the way in home tech has evolved not the game industry itself(tv, efficient and smaller processors, monitors etc).

As for influance with exeption to nintendo who I think are definatly japanese focused in their exclusives with stuff like zelda, harvest moon, pokemon, animal crossing(my fave) etc, i think both sony and ms are happy to bring any game from whatever continent
    or country to their platform.

I think the main shift is in where the gamer is, for instance the X1 games being developed for the chinese market, to be the main factor rather than the origin of the platform itself, gl.

The reason I don't visit more arcades is because they are two bloody expensive, £2 for 3 minutes of game play..........

If you look at the top 50 best selling games in Japan so far in 2014 MGS is the closest thing to a FPS on the list.

    http://kotaku.com/here-are-the-top-games-in-japan-for-2014-so-far-1606457639

I was born and raised in the US, never been to Japan and that list appeals to me more than the best selling US games list. The US releases tend to be short and lack depth. You can only play so many FPS's before they all feel the same.

I think in my case it's more an age thing than a cultural thing. I grew up playing games that were difficult, had depth, and you could easily put a 100 plus hours in. I'd love to play the DS rpgs on a 60 inch TV. The Japanese tend to like their games to be
portable so I don't see that happening.

I think the downside for us in the US is that publishers now believe that only FPS's and button mashing action games will sell here. That severely limits our options which is always a bad thing. The Japanese list covers just about every genre.

US PC developers are starting to bring back some genres that have been dead here for years so hopefully the consoles will follow and we'll have something for everyone.

    @randver

I read that list and. well I have 0 games on it. Not much interest in any of them at all. You might see variety but I see a list of stuff I don't want. And yes I like variety. I play anything but a JRPG and RTS. also stealth has grown to bore me. In other
words, we all have different taste in games, and yes it could be from cuture in a way, but there isn't a definitive "better" game then another. its all opinions. Personally I prefer western games by a lot.

  14. Atari created the first multi games console the problem was it lacked variety and power. It was OK for the time, commodore created the Amiga and took gaming to the next level. Sega made gaming popular and bought it to the masses with Sonic and their arcade
conversions. Before Sega came a long video games were kinda locked in their own constraints what they actually could do. Sega changed that forever, and really created the gaming industry alongside Nintendo. You should never forget the roots of the industry.

Microsoft, Redmond, WA, USA. Sony is Japanese. You are using Market Share as your analysis.

Example, CA uses a bunch of hybrid imported foreign cars instead of GM, Ford, American made vehicles. So is CA no longer part of America because of their choice of vehicle?

    Get on topic.
