Console Won't Turn On? -- Check Here!

What happens if your Xbox 360 won’t turn on? Depending on what version console you own, the troubleshooting steps may vary, so read carefully! Or, if you'd like a more interactive-approach, be sure to check the official
    troubleshooter
    on support.xbox.com.

    Xbox 360 Original Console

Press the eject button on the console

If the console still does not turn on when you press the eject button, please skip ahead to Checking the power supply for your Xbox 360 Console. If the console does turn on, then there may be an issue with your faceplate.

    Remove the faceplate

Position your console horizontally, and remove all of the cables from the back of the console. While holding the console firmly, push the faceplate away from the console using your thumbs. It will take some force, so be sure to put a little elbow grease
    into it!

    Inspect the faceplate

On the reverse-side of the faceplate, you should see eight ‘tabs:’ four are around the power button, two are above the button, and two are below it
. If any of these tabs are disconnected or broken, the faceplate will need to be replaced.

    Reattach the Faceplate

If the tabs are intact, then go ahead and align the tabs on the faceplate with the slots on your console, and push firmly until the faceplate clicks back into place. Give the power button another try. If the console still will not power on, then you’ll
need to set up a repair. You can check your warranty status and set one up using our Online Service Center.

    Xbox 360 S Console

    Press the power button

The Xbox 360 S is touch sensitive, so be sure you’re pressing it with the tip of your bare finger. If the console turns on, you’re good to go!

If you’ve pressed the power button with your bare finger and the console still won’t turn on, then you’ll want to check the light on the power supply, to see what color it is.

Checking the power supply for your Xbox 360 Console

Take a moment to check your power supply unit (the power brick that plugs into your wall outlet or power strip), to see what color the light on the unit is. Be sure you are not connected through a surge protector when preforming these steps!

The light on my power supply is green.

    Check your power supply cables

Turn off your console. Unplug the power supply from your console, and remove the power cord from the outlet and the other end of the power supply. Reattach the cables, making sure everything is plugged in nice and snug, and try turning on the console.

If the light on the power supply is still green, and your console will not turn in, then it will require a repair. You can check your warranty status and set one up using our Online Service
    Center
    .

The light on my power supply is red.

    Check your power supply cables

Turn off your console. Unplug the power supply from your console, and remove the power cord from the outlet and the other end of the power supply. Reattach the cables, making sure everything is plugged in nice and snug. Turn your console back on. If the
light on the power supply is still red, continue to the next step.

    Try a different outlet

Turn off your console. Unplug your power supply from the console and the wall outlet, and then take the power supply and console into another room. Don’t worry about the video cables for now.

Plug the power supply into an outlet in the room, and then plug the power supply into the console. Make sure everything is nice and snug, and then power on the console. (The console will flash four red lights, but only because the video cable isn’t attached,
    so don’t worry.)

What color is the light on the power supply now? Is it green? If so, don’t plug the power supply into the original outlet until it’s been inspected, or until you get a new power strip. If the light on the power supply is still red, move on to the next
    step.

Let your power supply cool down

Turn off your Xbox 360 console. Unplug the power supply from its outlet and from the console, and let the supply cool down for one hour. Once cooled, reattach the cable to the console and outlet, make sure everything is nice and snug, and turn the console
back on. If the light on the power supply is still red, the power supply will need to be replaced.

The light on my power supply is orange.

    Check your power supply cables

Turn off your console. Unplug the power supply from your console, then remove the power cord from the outlet and the other end of the power supply. Reattach the cables, making sure everything is plugged in good and snug. Turn your console back on. If
the light on the power supply is still orange, continue to the next step.

    Try another power supply

See if you can borrow a different power supply to try on your console, to determine if the issue is with the console itself, or the power supply. Remember, power supplies from the Original Xbox 360 are not compatible with the Xbox 360 S, so be sure to
    borrow the right one!

If the console powers on with the new power supply, then your power supply will have to be replaced. If the console still won’t power on, then it will require a repair. You can check your warranty status and set a repair up using our Online
    Service Center
    .

My power supply isn’t lighting up at all

    Check your power supply cables

Turn off your console. Unplug the power supply from your console, and remove the power cord from the outlet and the other end of the power supply. Reattach the cables, making sure everything is plugged in nice and snug. Turn your console back on. If the
light on the power supply is still orange, continue to the next step.

    Try a different outlet

Turn off your console. Unplug your power supply from the console and the wall outlet, and then take the power supply and console into another room. Don’t worry about the video cables for now.

Plug the power supply into an outlet in the room, and then plug the power supply into the console. Make sure everything is nice and snug, and then turn the console on. (The console will flash four red lights, but only because the video cable isn’t attached,
    so don’t worry.)

What color is the light on the power supply now? Is it green? If so, don’t plug the power supply into the original outlet until it’s been inspected, or until you get a new power strip. If the light on the power supply still isn’t lighting up, then the
power supply will need to be replaced.

I tried everything, but now what?
