    Console Stuck on "System Update Failed"


    I have a Xbox 360S 250GB that I got a day ago. It booted fine and went through the initial setup up. It requested a system update.

    It tried to update but only says the same thing every time and stop on the update failed screen.

    Message: Can't update your console



    Status Code: 42FE-445E-B680-2528-C000-0185

    I know it says it is a download issue, but it is connected via a Ethernet cable, which I know works since this is how it downloaded the update from Live in the first place. On top of that, how can that be an issue if I am using a CD or USB?!?!

    Below are the things I have tried:

    • Use a CD to apply 17502 - Failed
    • Use a USB to apply 17502 - Failed (This shows the progress bar get about 3/4's the way before it fails)
    • Eject HHD and re-seat it - Nothing
    • Reset the HHD from another xbox 360S (System Cache clear, formatted, rollback updates)
    Again, I can't get to the Dashboard so I can't interact with anything there. Kinda of annoyed see how I just got it and I can't do anything with it because of this system update with 0 work-arounds.

    Hey guys, really sorry to hear about the update issues! We'd love to help, but in order to do so, we'll need you guys to please create your own thread. Before doing so, take a look at

    this page     to see if your error code (with troubleshooting steps!) are listed. If not, please post the code you're getting in your thread, along with what you may have tried already. Console Stuck on "System Update Failed" :) Thanks guys!

    Xbox "System Update Failed"

    Yeah this is really stupid. I've been trying to download it since I got home from 6 today. First time It ran for like a half hour then told me to check my connection. Second time it seemed like it was done, restarted my console and everything, then started
    downloading again. I tried reattaching my hard drive but thats about as far as I'm going. My modem is on the other side of my house and plugging it into that directly is not an option I can only do wireless. The fact is, I shouldn't have to do all this tedious
    crap to try and get it to work, burning updates onto cd and what not, especially since its always worked before. Thats a hassle and since I'm paying 60 dollars a year just to even get on, it should work. I shouldn't have to be the one to fix their crap. Jesus
    just get it to work this has been going on since I tried downloading it 2 days ago. I really wish I just bought a PS3.

    System update failed and stuck in loop

    Hi there,

    I don't think you will get an answer here other then you should request a repair to get the console fixed.

    For the main reason that system tampering is not allowed and requesting a way to flash or reset a console back to it's defaults when the console doesn't even start up succesfully might be considered as system tampering.

    There is a way to roll back an update but that requires that the system starts succesfully

    Here's the button combination for rolling back the update:

    On your console, go to Settings hub, and then select System.

    Select Storage.

    On your controller, press the following button sequence:

    1.Press the left bumper.

    2.Press the right bumper.

    3.Press the X button.

    4.Press the left bumper.

    5.Press the right bumper.

    6.Press the X button.

    the only supported fix for this is to send it in to MS. However, if the console has been tampered with, I am not sure if they will touch it.

    There are other ways around this, however they all require you to breach the terms of use, as well as knowledge as to what the original DVD manufacturer and model # of the DVD was in there when the console was new (for example: Samsung model #xxx).



    My recommendation is to try to take it up with the person you bought it with. I know that'll probably be difficult.
