    Console keeps shutting off


    Hello,

    I have a question concerning my console, an xbox 360 slim.

    As of late, it's been shutting off on itself whenever I'm playing a game after about 2 or so hours. However, whenever I watch a DVD or use Netflix, it doesn't happen, it doesn't shut itself off.

    I know something is overheating (the power supply has a red light after, but after cooling down, the red light has disappeared) and I let it cool down accordingly, but I was just wondering if you know what exactly is overheating? Is it the power supply or is
    it the console? Which one seems more likely?

    If you could help me out, I'd appreciate it. It'll help in fixing the problem, so thank you so much.

    Greetings, petemech. To add on to Shadow's post, I would also recommend taking a look at the steps at the bottom of the support article JEM linked. That should help confirm whether you need a replacement power supply. Thanks!

    Console keeps shutting off

    I've been trying to play Dragon's Dogma, but whenever I try the xbox shuts off and the box on the power cord gets a red light. I've tried switching outlets and I've let it rest for a couple of hours, but it still shuts off a few minutes in. What do I do?

    Hello Reacted!

    I would first try the PSU. Make sure that it is plugged into the wall and not one of them surge plugs. Make sure nothing is on or around both units. Listen to make sure that you hear the fan kick on every once in a while. I would feel both the next time
    it shuts off. Which one feels warm? Try another outlet on the wall.

    xFR3AK,

    I’ve plugged my power supply into the wall like you said and gamed. Sadly, after two or hours, the xbox shut itself off again. Both feel warm (console mostly the fan), but the power supply is significantly warmer.

    I’ve tried them, yes, which more or less increased my worry that it might be my console, as the red light (on the power supply) disappears after cooling down.

    I dont know if they still sell them, but there is a cooling unit you can buy that sits under the Xbox.

    Before you buy a new power supply, it MAY be that your power supply is simply overheating. Check all the ventilation holes for obstructions/dust, and give it a clean. Also make sure that it's in a place where air can freely circulate around it to keep
    it cool - if this doesn't work then it would seem that you do indeed need a new power supply.
