Console consuming data for no apparent reason

On many occasions, I've noticed the One will be consuming data for no apparent reason. Like right now, it's maxing out my meager 6Mb/s download speed, and has been for nearly 20 minutes. There are no downloaded queued, and other obvious reason for this
data consumption. The only thing I can think of is that it may be for marketplace updates, but I would think the tiles and such would be stored in the cloud. Even if not though, the amount of data being consumed seems far too excessive to be simple tile images
and such. Plus, ive noticed this happening at times when the tiles don't update, or only very few on the main screen do (to immediate right of the most recent item tile). Furthermore, I've also noticed that it will often max out both upload and download when
I install a new game, and I can't see any logical explanation for that happening. The only thing I could come up with in that case is that perhaps MS is using us as content servers to stare game download data with other who are downloading the same game at
the same time, maybe as a means to reduce strain in their network/servers.

Does anyone have any info about these seemingly unexplainable data usages?

    :)

Console consuming data for no apparent reason

Below is a screenshot of my routers bandwidth meter. The console is setting idle with nothing downloading (supposedly), and the moment I switch it off, the rate flat lines. At this time, the console was the only device running off if that dd-wrt client
bridge, so I know that it's not due to some other device on my network. Data was being consumed at that rate for at least 20 minutes prior to me navigating to this forum and writing the post above. So in total, no less than 30 minutes, but possibly longer.

it will most likely be updating some games in the background and uploading/synching games saves and dvr files. as you cannot see these happening in realtime through any setting this will be most likely the culprit, also make sure you have actually quit
any games that you were playing or apps as they can still run in the background.

Like your Smartphone your XBox ONE will speak with it's Microsoft Overlords for a variety of reasons and purposes.

This is not something sinister (though some might argue it is) but rather simply how your modern devices work.

    Information is power.

I don't care what you watched on Youtube... but Microsoft and their partners do because it allows them to target you for specific sales and content for your Dashboard.

Mine only uses a couple kbs a second when idle. What does it read when you check your bandwidth usage...say going back hours?

Default setting on Windows 10; made sure it was the first thing to turn off. "Trying" to use my P.C.s as their servers...that takes guts! Lol.

    Peace, J.R.

Console consuming data for no apparent reason

I supposed DVR content may be one culprit, but games save and cloud sync shouldn't take the amount if data were talking about. For that matter, I doubt my watch lists would either, but that's kind of a non-issue because I rarely use the console for streaming
because I do that over my Chromecast, which is connected straight into my TV. Also, that data would be upstream, not downstream. The only time I notice large upstream bandwidth being used for long periods is when I'm downloading games, patches, or dlc. I
also have background downloads switched off and the console in "energy saver" off mode (due to me noticing unaccounted for data being sent or received when it was on "instant on" mode, but powered off)

And that's kind of my point.. I'm pretty savvy with tech and networking, and I'm aware of how much data should be transmitted for small updates to the tiles/store, cloud data, etc etc. Those types of "syncing" jobs shouldn't be consuming much data at all,
and esp not what amounts to a gigabyte of data every half an hour.

As the person mentioned, I'm very well aware of the recent (imo shady) activities MS has tried with the default setting in Windows 10, so it's not much if a stretch in my mi d to find out they would be up to similar things with this console. And while there
are a few logical explanations given here, it doesn't add up to GBs of data on the basis that I've noticed this happening.

I'm not sure what this will help to prove, but as requested, below is a pic if my consoles bandwidth usage page:

that usage on your xbox is really low in deed, i use approx 200 - 250 gb per month as im always online, i also have over 200 games installed that are always getting updates in some form or another, i use on demand services alot too. i see last month it
was high on yours, did you download some games then and have some updates and do you play destiny, last time i checked what destiny was using when i was online it was consuming approx 2GB - 5GB per hour of being online.

also this issue of data usage has been known since launch if you take a look at this forum
