my question is this...i bought a used Xbox One from a pawn shop.

it came with a few games on it that seem to work just fine but i dont own or even have the discs....

do i own the games now too? do they last forever? this is my second pawn shop xbox and one of them had GTA on it and it lasted for like 2 months and all of the sudden one day it says do you own this DISC? i bought the game and the price was built in for
GTA so i felt rippped .....game worked fine for 2 months and then just one day....boom...

how does this process work? what am i missing?

    :)

  2. Confused about accounts/profiles

OK, this is a little convoluted.

I bought the kids an xbox 360 Christmas '13. I set it up, and got a live gold membership. I haven't used it since. The live gold membership has since expired. Now I want to get a live gold account for my daughter. I purchased it, created an account
for her at xbox.com, and redeemed it. Now I can't figure out how to get it on her account/profile on the console. (Previously, I was under the mistaken impression that the gold membership was for the console, and put it on my account/profile. This time,
    she wan't on her account/profile.)

A year and a half later, I've forgotten how this was all set up.

So, are the account & profile the same thing? I don't see any email/password for her profile to connect to Live to download the gold membership. My profile requires me to log in using email and password. Can I link the new account I created on xbox.com
to her profile on the console?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Confused about accounts/profiles

    Hi,

I'm gonna try to explain you how this all works.

First of, does she have a own e-mail address? You don't have to mention her address here, but if you know that email address you can recover it right here if you know some questions to answer.

    - Recover your account

Thats an account i'm talking about. A 'Microsoft account'. Then you have a Gamertag You could call that a Xbox Profile thats attached to the Microsoft account.

If you still know the password, or you are you've succeeded the recovery process, you can download the profile to the xbox. On how to do that you can read that on this support page.

    support.xbox.com/.../download-your-xbox-live-profile-to-another-360-console

All xbox profiles which are made on xbox.com are unable to get the 1 month trial Xbox Live Gold. The only way to get the Gold status is to create a new account on the xbox. But you need a new e-mail address for that with no profile attached.

Let us know how you are doing.

The person who previous owned the console set it as their 'Home' console. This means any account on that machine can play those games.

So that is why you can play them at the moment.

However if that person ever buys another One, and then makes that their Home console, you'll lose access to those games.

  5. Yep, you never actually owned those games - someone else did. You just had the privilege of playing their games on "their" Xbox console. Once they designate another Xbox console as "their" console, you completely lose access to those games. Generally, if
you get rid of a console, it's a good idea to remove everything from the internal HDD first so this kind of thing doesn't happen.

The licensing works like this: -

You can set any 1 console as your Home console. When you buy content using your gamertag on your Home console, any other gamertags can access the content online or offline. You can switch Home consoles up to 3 times per year currently, so the content you
download isn't permanently tied to one particular machine. It's only tied to it while it's set as the Home console.

Your content is also permanently tied to your gamertag, so if you sign into a console that isn't your Home console, you can access your games and apps (re-downloading them if necessary) and play/use them, but only while you're signed into Xbox Live.

So, as mentioned, because the previous owner of your Xbox One had that console set as his Home machine, the content on it is accessible to anyone who uses it, which is why you can access it, but if he was to log into another Xbox One at some point and make
that his Home machine, you would lose access to that content on your console as you don't actually own it, so to continue playing those games you'd have to buy them.

my suggestion is to play them as much as you can. Once the previous owner sets a new XB as his home, or his XBL account expires you will loose access to the games. Do not fear tho. If its a game you like you can just purchase a digital license and continue
    playing.

So you want to complain to a developer that the games you weren't expecting to play, the games you didn't pay for, the games someone else bought no longer work on your used console? Please do let us know how this turns out.

    Where does he say that?

He felt ripped off because the first Xbox One he bought came with GTA V. That was listed as being part of the deal, then after 2 months it stopped working, which is why he asked how the licensing works.
