Compensation for Xbox One hardware failure.....$5.

I purchased my Xbox One as a Christmas present for myself, which means I bought it in December 2013. After a few months, my Xbox One decided it would like to pick and choose when and if it would like to read a disk, either game or DVD. If I was persistent
however, and inserted and ejected the disk over and over again, it would eventually work however, so I decided to tough it out, as I didn't want to be without my Xbox. Now, after a little over 6 months of use, my Xbox One has almost flat-out refused to read
any disks at all. Bear in mind that this is a $500 product that had a shorter lifespan than a blender bought at a dollar store. So I have decided to bite the bullet, and send in my Xbox One to be replaced. The estimated timeline is 2-3 weeks, which means
this is a huge inconvenience. Not to mention when they send me a new unit, I will have to re-install every single thing I've installed over the last 6 months (can't wait). Understandably then, I called Xbox Support and inquired as to what sort of compensation
I would be receiving for Microsoft's failure to build a product that could last longer than 6 months. The answer? 1-month of Xbox Live. A 1-year Xbox Live Gold subscription retails for $60, which means they feel that 5 bleeping dollars in credit makes up
for their product's failure, as well as the gross inconvenience associated with it. The lady that I talked to on the phone said that was all she was capable of giving me. When I asked who I could talk to that would be able to do something more, she said
to post on the Xbox.com forums, and that perhaps someone from Xbox's team would contact me. I asked her to instead provide me with a contact number for whoever would be contacting me regarding my post, and she informed me that they do not have a contact number,
which I was confused by. I asked how she would contact them if she needed to, and she said email. So apparently there are people in the Microsoft organization who do not have a phone on their desk. Astounding. Seeing as I was getting nowhere, I thanked
her for doing nothing for me and hung up. So here it is, mysterious Microsoft employees living in a pre-Alexander Graham Bell universe, here is my post on your forum.

Let the record show, I have owned an Xbox, Xbox 360, and now an Xbox One. I have had an Xbox Live Gold account for seven years, and have purchased many Microsoft games. (Long live Halo). So I ask again, is 5 dollars really all you can do to compensate
    me?

    :)

You should be under warranty still until 2015 sometime. Get it replaced/repaired and you should be all set. My Xbox does that too, but I think it's a software problem instead of a hardware issue. I could be wrong, however.

I guess given the fact that you opted to buy a brand new and untested game system, thus choosing to become a first adopter of the system in question, I would be forced to ask why you feel, given all the others out there having similar issues, that you should
receive any kind of compensation at all?

I've been a first adopter for five out the last six major console releases (PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, and Xbox One) and every single time I went into knowing that it's a new system and that there is going to be issues and in choosing to buy it early I was
choosing to bear that burden. Where is my compensation for the 8 months of time in the first year I was without my PS2 for the 6 times I had to swap it out? The three times for the original Xbox? 2 for the 360? 4 times for the PS3? 2 times for the Xbox
One? You're having to swap yours out this one time, what is it you feel they owe you? $10, $15, $20? What's the going rate for your "inconvenience"? And then why haven't I received 10x as much for mine?

I hope I've proven my point by now. The $5 you were offered were actually above and beyond what their policy allows. That you found someone at all that was willing to do anything for you is a good thing. I'm sorry you are far to entitled to see that.
So let me save you a lot of time and frustration here: You aren't going to receive any compensation. At all. The more you rally against it, and the ruder you become, the less likely they are to do anything for you. The support people you interact with
are just people, and the more you attack them, the less they are likely they are want to bend policy to help you.

Do yourself a favor, get it swapped out, get into a new console, enjoy your time playing. You aren't due anything other than that.

Well bigbenx88, how about we try to change the industry a bit. Rather than just accepting the release of untested products we should be holding these billion dollar companies to a higher standard. You really think it would cost them money to give out a years
sub? Which I think would be more than fair. It also isn't unheard of for companies compensating you for purchasing a product that breaks. Blizzard is a great example of a company that compensates it's customers, whenever they have unexpected down time for
even a day on WoW they give everyone a week for free. Also when I used to play WoW my account got hacked, they went above and beyond by retrieving all the items that were lost, gave me about double the gold that I had, and also gave me a month sub for free.
That was for a product that was nowhere near $500.

Basically if more companies were encouraged to compensate customers for their failures they might realize that is it cheaper to release better / more polished products. Especially since the Xbox not reading discs was also an issue on the 360.

So instead of saying "Oh, well I never got compensated for product failures I had to deal with" Maybe you should have been demanding compensation from these companies and encouraging them to release a higher quality product. We all know they have the money
    to do it.

  7. The interesting thing is in any manufacturing activity parts are bought from a multitude of venders, and given the millions of units sold and probably a few more millions manufactured there are bound to be failures of certain components. While yes a Utopia
would be awesome, however that's not going to happen on this planet, I would hope that you would extend some grace. Yes, I understand you spent a lot of money for the XB1, but do you not make mistakes at your job for which you get paid? I make a lot of mistakes
everyday and I'm very thankful for the grace my family, friends, coworkers, managers and strangers extend me each and every day. Everyone makes mistakes, the only difference is one mistake on MS's part or their component manufacturers part results in world
wide anger. I really like the Microsoft brand and especially the changes they've made in their service and feedback mechanisms, it proves to me they are still working hard to be a great company and to lower the walls between the client (us) and the employees
at MS. I feel that before you judge someone or a company it's best to understand them. Understand their goal which is to stay profitable so they can continue to support their products, the 1000's if not millions of decisions that go into place to release
such a product. But maybe you do. Those are the things I try to remind myself of before I get mad about mistakes being made. Am I perfect? No, could I do a better job then them? No. Do I have some ideas on how it could be better, if yes provide detailed plans
or suggestions along with encouragement for the things they do great already. Not saying that'll get you what you want but that's how I'd like to receive constructive criticism. My 2¢.

Compensation for Xbox One hardware failure.....$5.

I think Liv hit the nail on the head there. It's not about just throwing my arms up in the air and saying "oh well", it's about understanding there is going to be issues. And it was a tested product, they sent out 100,000 beta consoles before the system
was released and spent 18 months tweaking it. There comes a point where the controlled confines of a beta test are just not enough, it takes a release to really test the system. What matters is how the company responds when something goes wrong. That's
why they offer a 1 year warranty, why they pay for the shipping, why they pay the repair costs and exchange costs. One RO from start to finish can cost the company upwards of $100 in shipping, parts, and labor. And lets not forget, MS isn't seeing $500/$400
for every system sold. Their costs to vendors is roughly half that. So when you set up a RO for a repair or exchange, they're losing nearly half their profits right there.

I think the real problem here is the systemic problem with society today. People as a whole are over entitled. They think the that just because they buy something they are entitled to more than they're given. When you buy an Xbox you buy the system, it's
parts, and the warranty that comes with it. You agree to those terms. Whining for more is just sad.

to me its not about compensation but more about customer service and how they handle the problem.

Some companies just don't care once they have sold the product.

To be honest Microsoft for me are quite good when dealing with system faults !!!! unlike some companies I shal not name.

The only time compensation should come in to it is if that product is not replaced or fixed within a reasonable time.

In the UK when you buy a product from a retailer they are supposed to deal with any problems for the first 12 months, they deal with manufacturer etc the problem with most people is trying to get the retailer to live up to the obligation they owe you and
under government rules and consumer rights act etc they are to support that product within its 12 month warranty.

anyway getting away from the OP.

Compensation should only be given when

    1) that product has caused physical injury or damage to you self or living area.

    2) When reasonable time for fixing or replacement has not been met .

Yes we would love to live in a utopia of everything working perfectly but it doesn't happen !!! remember we are all human and mistakes can be made.
