Child trying to join Xbox Live with existing profile

I am currently having this issue while trying to help my 12 yr old grandson to be able to access X-Box live with a new card he just bought to use on his new home 360 system. He paid for the card with his own money and was excited to be able to use his system
    at home.

Previously I have had my 5 grandkids at my home...playing under my profile in the Kids room and I controlled their activities from there. Found out the hard way last night that he has to be 13 to have his own Live acct. Very frustrating. I'll try to add
him tonight to mine using the parental permissions and hopefully be done with it. He'll lose any accomplishments earned in the past but it seems that Microsoft leaves us little choice. I just left the Microsoft account site and although it says there are
ways to add a child to my account it does not show how or give that option that I can see. Yes.. I will contact their support to find out but YOU guys are the ones who have required the connection between these accounts as far as I can tell. If I can do this
from here, could someone explain how? I'll recheck the FAQS but somehow I missed something if it is there.

This procedure should NOT be as complicated as it has been made! I did attempt to read the COPPA requirements but the law is like trying to translate Chinese to Latin. I should have guessed that anything the Government (oxymoron) gets involved with would
turn into a nightmare! IS there a step-by-step procedure to be able to add my grandson to my Xbox account? That would be the best thing until he turns 13 in a few months.

    Thank You

    :)

We are just now having this exact same issue. After a few years we feel our kids can now go online with XBOX live with parental controls but there is no way to migrate an existing profile.

What a load of BS, I get the same issues everyone else reports that you go to the child's existing profile and choose join XBOX live to only get it is associated with another profile.

yet other topics suggest you are able to take an offline profile and "promote" it to an online one. Seems like the only way to "promote" a child's offline account is to lie when signing up for a new XBOX live account when it asks for their age.

I'm having a similar problem, We went through the great "Xbox gold account conversion", and now my Son's account will no longer work, even after I bumped him to adult status on my account page. All Microsoft wants is another $60/yr, despite the ads saying
everyone can play under my gold account. Any FAQ or other support docs I can find have been worthless to this point in helping me resolve this issue.

For a consumer product whose main audience is kids, MSFT has really not made this easy.

    Hi,

I know that this is a little more than usual. but in order to get things rolling you would need to create a parent account to be stored on the console. This will house all of the parental settings for the child. Once you get it set up the child account
can be linked to you on the Xbox.com website. You will be prompted back and forth to log in as parent when the child is logging in but once everything hits the ground it will flow properly. Once it is linked you will have to agree to give permissions to the
child to play on online there is a 50 cents charge to a credit card. This charitable to the Missing Childrens foundation, and it verifies that you are an adult.

after that you are done Child trying to join Xbox Live with existing profile :)
