Child Account can't purchase free games with gold

Ok, here's the scenario. I am the parent and I have my own Xbox live account, but it does not have gold. I manage my son's live account which does have gold membership.

As he has gold, he is entitled to the free games with gold. We only have an Xbox 360, but we hope to get an Xbox One soon. Therefore it makes sense to purchase the free games with gold on Xbox One as well as Xbox 360.

So currently Rayman Legends is on Xbox One gold, but when I purchase it from his account I get the error:

"Purchase of this content is currently not allowed for child and teen accounts."

To clarify, my son is able to purchase from Xbox store via his Xbox 360 (I've enabled purchases for him, but his game age rating is up to 12+).

Even if I go into Family Safety settings and disable it for him (so he has access to anything) I still can't purchase it for him.

    What's going on here?

    Cheers

    James

    :)

  2. Problem downloading free xbox 360 games with gold to my xbox one

there is 2 possibilities that could be causing this

    1. You dont have a payment option on the account. yes even for the free 360 games you have to have a payment option on the account.

    2. Your account is a child account. child accounts can not purchase 360 games even the free ones for games with gold.

  3. Child Accounts Unable to use Gold Membership on Parent Account

    Good day,

I have a child account that cannot access the my parent account which has Live Gold membership. Child account trying to purchase a game but it will not allow using the Gold membership price. Also unable to download free games via the Gold membership. Xbox
One is set as the "home" box for both child and parent. So why is it that the child account appears to have no access to Gold?

  5. Hello. This is s bit of a pickle. But I am sure there is a way around this, not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot on the Xbox One otherwise you may have to purchase gold on the parent account.

Step 1. On your childs account with gold on the Xbox One go yo settings > My Xbox > Make this my Home console / Share Gold On This Console

step 2. If that succeeded which I am unsure of as I have never done this, download the silver parent account to the Xbox One. Then your childs account will be sharing gold throughout the console, if it works, simply go yo Rayman and then try purchase the
    free game with.gold

Let me know if this works!

    Thanks,

    Dan

  6. I misread,

You do not have the Xbox One yet, so unless you are trying to get it free in advance, the only way would be to get a subscription on the parent account, unless there may be one other idea

Login to your childs account at xbox.com when accessing privacy settings on the website have a look for Xbox One privacy settings, I am sure there are two separate settings for both 360 and the one, try to locate enable purchases within the xbox one privacy
settings confirm.it and if prompted consent it with the associated parent account, then try purchase the free xbox one game rayman

Let me know if this works

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Hi Dan, thanks for helping.

That is correct, I am trying to get the game free in advance, just as all XBLGold members are entitled to, regardless of whether they have an Xbox One or not. As mentioned above, Microsoft are even enabling this claiming of Xbox One free games via Xbox 360
console menus, so it is definitely permitted.

I tried to find what you're referring to with XBox One privacy settings, but I just got a help page, not settings:

    support.xbox.com/.../xbox-one-manage-privacy-and-online-safety

Can you help direct me to the right link?

    Thanks

    James

  8. Child Account can't purchase free games with gold

    Hello,

    Certainly can!

    Visit account.xbox.com/.../Settings

It will ask you to pass security with your chosen security method, once you have done that next to the privacy tab on the left, click the next one titled "Xbox One Online Safety" and under that tab you will find an option for "Buy and download" with three
options containing Anything, Only free, Nothing" choose the relevant one and click Save

Let me know if it works Child Account can't purchase free games with gold :)

    Thanks,

    Dan

Ok, bit confused now as to which account I should be doing what as. I tried with my son's account to access that page and is said a child is trying to access settings and advised I log in to xbox.com as the parent.

I don't see the same privacy tab on the left or "Xbox One Online Safety".

Ah! found it... I can see myself and my son's account as selectable boxes. I can then see a list of the things each selected account can do underneath.

However "Buy and download" is already on "Anything" for both of us. This is inline with settings I set previously in the Family Safety interface in Windows 7 (which applies his Live account settings across his phone, Windows log in and Xbox).

I believe I'm doing all the right things, but for some reason there's a loophole that doesn't let him purchase free content via the web.

  11. That is very strange, with all settings as you said correctly the only advice I could give is purchase gold on your account, or contact support at
support.xbox.com/contact-us. To see if they can suggest something alternative or do anything their end

Sorry for the inconvenience, please keep me posted

    Regards,

    Dan

  13. Child Account can't purchase free games with gold

Sometimes there are glitches in some stuff. I once had a family pack that went corrupt, and no matter what agent I spoke to in customer support, they kept transferring me because none of them could load my family pack without obtaining error after error
with mo information out of it. It really could be a number of things, if all the settings are set correctly, it may just be a problem xbox customer support can solve by escalating it to tier 3 support

    Regards,

I'm curious ProofJarl348 if Xbox support was able to help you out with this or if you were able to find a solution. I spent over an hour the other day with Xbox support an they couldn't com up with anything I'd be able to do to get the games except for have
my son login on a friend's Xbox One (unfortunately they all have PS instead)

No, they were extremely helpful (as always) and persisted at trying everything, however I don't think we ended up being able to purchase via the website.

However, we did find out one important detail. In the "Privacy & online safety" section of the 360 settings, there's 2 settings right at the bottom that are worded something like allowing Microsoft and 3rd parties to send you adverts and offers. If you disable
both of these, the Home and Games tiles are dramatically different, and you can't even see the Games with Gold offers.

This means Microsoft require you to allow direct marketing from them and 3rd parties in order to take advantage of Games with Gold.

This is probably most likely the cause of my problems, having these options disabled in both the child and parent account. I assume enabling all settings would resolve the problem.

It's somewhat frustrating that you must allow 3rd parties to direct market you and your children just to get the Games with Gold offers to which you are entitled, but if that's the way it is, so be it. Free market rules.
