Charged from a credit card, although there is account balance

I just got an e-mail reminding me that my account balance will expire if I don't use it soon.

So, I went to xbox.com to buy some game, because I had almost 20$.

But, when I bought the game, that was few dollars more, my credit card got charged, but my balance still hangs there, expiring soon???

A mix of Credit Card and online gift cards. The Xbox Live marketplace is weird for me, it charges me tax when using a credit card directly, but doesn't charge me any tax when using my Microsoft account balance. So usually what I tend to do is always makes sure I have something in my account balance so when I use my credit card, it only subtracts what was left over after taking from the account, and this never includes tax.

You will be credited the balance.

Just like it works now. if I switched from a family account to a regular live account the difference gets charged back to my credit card.

 

Sorry to hear it. If your card is listed as the primary payment option it will be the first choice for payment unless you select otherwise. If you purchase more content be sure to select the Change Payment option and choose your currency. If the purchase
goes over what you have then you will be prompted to take the difference off the card.

 

Well, there is no option to change the payment method.

Looks like I'm about to lose this available balance...

To note, if you're buying Xbox 360 games you need to do this from the console if you want to use the funds in your Microsoft Account. The web-based Xbox 360 Marketplace does not support using these funds.

Try again from a console and you should find it works.
