Charge for a gamertag change that never happened

So I've been trying to change my gamertag and all the options i pick say they are reserved, even ones that claim to be free on this very site...

Eventually I gave up on trying for now, only to find that my account has been charged for a gamertag change that I never chose to take. I have the same gamertag now as I did before and I never clicked accept on any payment screen.

So yeah, I'd be nice to get that fixed please.

Is the first gamertag change really free?

The xbox support page about changing gamertags says:

"Follow these steps to change your gamertag. Note that the first time you change your gamertag, there’s no charge. However, there will be a small charge for all subsequent changes."

I followed the steps and I have never changed my gamertag before but it is still trying to charge me $9.99?

You're changing your gamertag due to an inappropriate joke? Did your coworker change your gamertag by any chance? If so, then your free gamertag change has already happened. So you will be charged for the change.

As mentioned, a forced gamertag change will happen when people report your gamertag as offensive, and XBLPET reviews it and enacts the change.

There is no warning when this happens. You'll get a generated tag. The old one is blacklisted and you'll never be able to get it back. If you want another chance at a new custom gamer tag, you'll have to pay the same fee as everyone else who wants a new
tag (forced change or not).

They used to let you change your gamertag for free after a forced change, but this was removed after people started abusing it with newer offensive gamertags.

As a final note, XBLPET, the people in charge of bans, suspensions, and your gamertag change, do not browse the forums and nobody here will be able to help you further.

To confirm the answer that others have given you:

You can change your Gamertag once for free (this is when you change it from the automatic Gamertag to your first Gamertag name).
Any further changes will be charged at approximately £10/$10 depending on your region. This can be done from your Xbox Profile on the console or the xbox.com website.
There has always been a charge for Gamertag changes. The only reason Gamertag changes might happen without a charge is when the name violates the Xbox Live Terms of Use and Code of Conduct when a forced change is given.
