Changing Original GamerTag

I am trying to change my original GamerTag which I have had since 2008. It says I can change it once for free, but then when I attempt to it it goes straight to billing me $9.99. I created this when I was a kid and have my first name in it, I would like
to change it now to something else. Is this possible without paying the $9.99, and why does it say I can change it for free if I can't?

Yes, changing the gamertag again should be possible, als changing back to your previous Gamertag is possible, as long as your original Gamertag isn't already taken by somebody else.

Keep in mind each change will require a payment.

Gamertag question?

I contacted Xbox support about changing my GamerTag to an original GamerTag that has not been used in ages on the Original Xbox and was told to post in the forums for help about it, so I guess I'm here for that if anyone has any help for me.

Sorry to hear you're having problems. It is true that everyone has one free tag change. However, when you first create your account and join Live you are given a random tag. The free change is applied when you changed it to what you have now.

If you would like to change the tag again then you would need to pay the amount shown.

Gamertags can't be deleted. You could change your current gamertag to something else, then have another MS account and change it to the original gamertag. However, you would still be faced with paying the gamertag change fee for the original account which
is what I believe you are wanting to avoid.

Hey angelgreg! To get the gamertag you will need to
change the original account's gamertag to free up the name you want. Once that is done, the second account will need to be changed to the gamertag you want. There isn't a way to reserve a gamertag so when you change the original account, anyone can register
that name if they do it before you. Thanks!

You want to change your gamertag?! "NeverGetsCaught" is pretty original and I'm sure that the minute you change it, someone else will take it. It's a pretty snazzy gamertag!

If You Have Already Changed Your Gamertag That Was Your Free One (Or If You Originally Set Your Gamertag When Creating The Account). Afterwards The Change Is Charged.
