Changing My Gamer Tag To an old one that ISN'T being used

Hello I go by on Xbox Live. I have been apart of the Xbox community for 10 years now and have been an avid gamer since then. Back when I started playing my original gamer tag was Donkeykick75 and I have changed it a few times between the years
but every time that I have changed it, I always had the name Donkey some where in it. I will never leave that name, I am just attached to it. Not too long ago I added the original name Donkey and I looked at his profile and he only has 1 friend and doesn't
have any recent games played and doesn't even have a profile picture. I believe that when you start playing the 360 you have to have a profile picture. Which leads me to believe that he has only played the original Xbox and has put down the controller since
then. I called the account center for Xbox and they cannot do anything about it nor will they help me. They told me that I have to post something on the forums about it so here I am. I would absolutely LOVE to have the gamer tag 'Donkey' because I have had
that name somewhere in my gamer tag since day 1. I have spent an insane amount of money with Xbox and Xbox Live and I will continue to do so since I love playing your system. I just don't think it is fair that someone has this gamer tag claimed and they haven't
even played in 8 years and I am still pouring money and playing every day on Xbox to this day. I could put the gamer tag to good use. Is there anyway I can be informed that the account is still being used in any way? Am I able to be notified if this gamer
tag does come available? What can I do about obtaining this gamer tag?

i have tried to change my gamer tag to the old one but says its already being used. and i see no where for me to switch tags only change it.

Games for Windows Live, XBL and Zune all share the same type of Gamer Tag system. So if the tag you want isn't being used on XBL, it is possible it is being used on one of the other two services.

 

There is nothing you can do until the owner decides to change their GT. MS about 5 years ago started to go through and reset original GT's that were not moved to the Xbox 360. MS soon stopped after people began selling "reclaimed"
original GT's.

In short, you more then likely will never get it and the owner keeps it, used or not.

 

You guys should send them a message if they are still wanting to claim their gamer tags after 3 years or so. Is there a way you can ask or inform this person about my inquiry? Because I have tried sending them a message but since they haven't picked up the
controller in over 8 years, there is no way they will EVER see my message. If they can't even respond to a conformation for the gamer tag then they shouldn't have it.

 

Microsoft accounts are used for services other than Xbox. A gamertag is attached to that account, so while it may not be in use on the console, it could very well be used elsewhere. Such as a login for Windows 10.

 

Is there anyway that MS can check to see if it is still being used? Like when I log in you guys know exactly when I log in last. So if there is no activity even being used with the MS account, it will still sit and collect dust and not let someone put it
to good use.

 

Microsoft can probably find out somehow, but Xbox support would not have access to that and probably would not tell you what services it is being used on.

whats with the profiles that dont exist but are taking the gamertag you want? i know zune or games for windows apparently uses the same system but they aren't linked together??? how does that make any sense? It takes up a gamertag but isnt compatible with
xbox live? hopefully i can get an official response and maybe they'll take that into consideration

 

A Profile on Windows is the same as a Profile on Xbox LIVE. If you were to Sign-in on a Win8 or Win10 PC right now it will be your XBL Profile. Same goes the other way, if someone who started a Profile on Windows was to Sign-in
on an Xbox it would be their Profile.

In short, they aren't just "linked", it is one and the same.
