Changing ms account associated with gamertag

My history with xbox started more than 11 years ago with the original xbox. I created an account during the Beta and that gamertag, email address as well as password have never changed. During the 11 years I have supported the brand with the 360, GFWL
platform, Windows phone 7 and 8, Xbox 1, Windows 8 and Surface. Apparently MS valued my loyalty enough to send me a 10th anniversary xbox 360 and a free xbox 1. Currently the only product I can enjoy is the xbox 360 due to "call us overprotective". On
every other product I get the same message: log into your 360 to change the account associated with your gamertag.

Let me make this clear: I have never changed anything associated with the account. It's never beed downloaded to another console. There is no money associated with the account currently. The new ms account has never been associated with a gamertag or
logged onto any windows device. The new account is more than 1 month old. I have additional security proofs set on the new account and they have been verfied. Yet I go through all the steps on the 360 and at the end it says "The can't be preformed at this
time".

This is not the account in question due to I can't log in to anything but the 360 with my gamertag. I've read other threads in this forum and none seem resolved. Are any official support people looking into this? Has anyone been able to get this to work?

I'd recommend you either contact Support or you could try changing the MS account your Gamertag is associated with.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

We may be able to do this without having to create a new account.

First, I would recommend trying our
Account Recovery Tool to see if we can get back that original e-mail address.

If you're not able to complete that, then your next best bet will be to contact
Phone Support as Mister Balloons suggested. They'll be best equipped to work with you and try to sort things out. Make sure to have the service number of the recovery tool so they hopefully won't ask you the same questions.

with the Gamertag.

A better way to explain this might be

1) Go to http://account.live.com and sign in with your current Microsoft Account for Gamertag 'NEW'

2) Pick UPDATE EMAIL ADDRESS and click on Or Get A New Email Address to assign Gamertag 'New' to a LIVE.COM or HOTMAIL.COM addresse

3) Mark up your calendar for 30 days from today

4) On D-DAY+30, Go to http://account.live.com and sign in with your current Microsoft Account for Gamertag 'OLD'

5) Pick UPDATE EMAIL ADDRESS and click on Or Get A New Email Address to assign Gamertag 'OLD' to the Microsoft Account used 30 days ago for 'NEW'

So, from what I know, create TEMP account. Validate if you use another service. If NEW was not already downloaded, it may make you wait 30 days before the MSA can be changed (I had this happen).

Once you've freed the tag from NEW, it will require you wait 30 days to move the tag from OLD to NEW.

Depending on how the process goes, it's more like 30-90 days. At the very minimum, it will take 30 days once you free up NEW.

Whatever you do, don't log into any of the MS sites with your NEW MSA. This will try and create ANOTHER Gamertag

Hello Tangalism, you can actually find a detailed guide of this process at http://support.xbox.com/en-US/billing-and-subscriptions/account-management/manage-microsoft-account .

You are correct, after step #2 it will require 30 days before you will be able to change the msa tied to that new GT. After the 30 days you will be able to change GTB to MSA3, and then GTA to MSA2. So long as you do it in this order you will be able to complete
this process after the first 30 day wait. If you do the change backwards you will have to wait an additional 30 days.

Also, if you create a dummy msa account using a hotmail or live email there is also a 30 day wait before you can change a gt to that email.

I hope that helped to clarify this for you a little bit. After explaining this to a few people myself this process gets really easy to understand.

NOTE: Like Raett said, DO NOT log in on any microsoft site with that email. Once you make that new email log out and never log in to it again.
