Changing gamertag without using an Xbox360/One console

I have been meaning to change my gamertag for a while so I looked up the Xbox support pages to see how it could be done.

Since it would be my second gamertag change, I know that it wouldn't be free, which is fine by me.

However, I also read that I can only do this if I have access to on of the Xbox consoles, so I cannot do it on either my Windows 8 machine or my Windows Phone.

Since I have no access to a console whatsoever, I would like to ask whether there is a way around this restriction. I was suggested to ask one of my friends and use their console (none of my friends have Xboxes) or I could go to a store and ask them
to use the machine for changing my gamertag - I am not sure though how comfortable I am entering my credentials on a public machine, since my account is tied to an Office subscription as well, among other things.

If the X1 uses the same mechanism as the 360 with one licence to the Gamertag and one to the console ID, how does changing the Home Console option affect the console ID licence?

 

Transfering Gamertag from an account to aonther WITHTOUT XBOX360!

i use 2 Live accounts and would like to transfer my gamertag from one account to the other.

I don't have an XBOX360, and never had one. I use my gamertag with Game for Windows LIVE.

I would like to know how to transfer this gamertag WITHOUT XBOX360.

I though that it can be done from here.

If you move the cursor over `My Account` at top right you get a drop down menu.

Click on `Profile` and you will see `Edit Gamertag` right in the centre of your profile page.

 

Thank you for the tip, but, unfortunately, it doesn't allow me to change the gamertag - instead, it refers me to a tutorial that shows how I could do it on the console. So, no joy there.

 

Use the Games for Windows Live client.

Download the free game of
Tinker, install and start the game. Recover your gamertag onto the PC. Then follow the instructions from this Microsoft article
support.microsoft.com/.../en-gb.

 

GFWL was shut down a while ago so that is no longer an option.

 

That me old mucker only refers to the Marketplace. The games, and the in-game client, still work.

Check my gamercard and see the magical appearance of Tinker.

Don't believe me, then try it for yourself. Perhaps you should confirm what you are saying before telling others they are wrong.

 

Yes, as far as I know, GFWL was replaced by Games for Windows Marketplace, and it no longer has this option. Furthermore, I would need 800 Microsoft points, which has been discontinued as well.

 

Yeah, you're right. I could have sworn they shut the client down at some point.

 

That's interesting. I started the Marketplace client and now I am unable to start it because of an error message. I try to get to the bottom of it, and then try your suggestion, Vaynel. Thanks for the tip!

 

I didn't fully download the client at first, but just tried downloading it fully and got an error. So I'm not sure it is actually working.

 

I managed to log in through Marketplace but when I click on gamertag, it gives me error code 80004005 saying "Can't retrieve information from LIVE. Please try again later."

 

Are you downloading the marketplace or the actual in-game client?
www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx is the one you want, its what is needed to play Tinker and get access to the things you need.

Edit: It seems I have to apologise to you both, as it seems as if the marketplace shutdown has stopped the ability to do this, since you can't buy the points any longer.

I'll try and track down a points card and see if they can still be redeemed.

You can still redeem points cards, but they'll convert into currency.
