Changing GamerTag via social.xbox.com/changegamertag

If you don't know if you change your gamertag at https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag you can change it for free even if you have already changed it. My question is if
you use
https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag to change it does it add the # and numbers even if the gamertag has not been taken by another gamer?

0F LI3Sanswer) here is the answer, If the gamertag has not been taken and is in the Lattin alphabet such as 123 or abc then a suffix will not be added.

Normally they will add on numbers at the end of a gamertag if the gamertag already exists.

The only way to change your gamertag is via the gamertag website here https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag. You will be charged for the gamertag change too.

If you want to change your gamertag to that name, you should be able to with the new gamertag system, but it will have a number on the end which is similar to discord, the new gamertag can be changed here
