Changing email ownership of Xbox account

I assume your mom uses other parts of this Microsoft account which Xbox is a part of. If this is the case the Microsoft account belongs to her. The Xbox part cannot be removed from the Microsoft account which holds it.

If Xbox was the only thing ever used then you can change the the email address that is associated with the Microsoft account. But this changes the whole account, so if it's her account your Xbox data is contained in then there's nothing you can do. Just like Google, GMail, Drive, calendar etc can't be separated and placed into different accounts.

What happens when you sign in with the new email that you added to the account?

All changing the email like you did was change the email that is used to sign into the account. Any games and progress for the account would not have been lost.

You can try and get ahold of xbox support at support.xbox.com/contact-us and give them the gamertag and if they can verify ownership of the account they can give you the email that is associated with the account.

No. To protect customer privacy, Microsoft can only help customers verify their account ownership through the online password recovery process. If the email address has been changed, it's not possible to verify account ownership.

Ultimately, the best thing to do would be to create a new account for your son and have you or his grandma have a separate parent account.

The best thing to do would be to create your own account. Account ownership cannot be transferred, so since you are not the original owner of the account and do not have access to their email, you would not be able to make changes like that.
