changed account privacy settings to adult but is still a child account

So I turned 18 in december last year and I am trying to change my microsoft account from child to adult using my Mum’s account, it says to go to the family settings and changeit from there, for some reason though even though I change the account privacy
to adult defaults it still says that the account is a child account, and I can’t remove it from the family otherwise I won’t be allowed to access the xbox services until added back in again. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this, it’s starting to get on my
nerves

You are allowed change the online safety and privacy settings for any profile on your console.

How to change your safety and privacy settings

Steps to follow:

First, you have to go to the My Account page

You need to sing in to your Xbox LIVE account clicking Sing In at the upper-right corner of the page.

Go to Settings and Preferences and select Privacy and Online Settings.

Now change the settings.

How to change your child’s safety and privacy settings

Steps to follow:

First, you have to go to the My Account page

You need to sing in to your Xbox LIVE account clicking Sing In at the upper-right corner of the page.

Proceed to Settings and Privacy and press Child.

Note: You’ll be asked for the parental Microsoft account in order to make changes to the child account’s safety settings.

Now change the settings.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. Is the account you are using a child account? Child accounts need to be tied to an adult account through a family in order to have their privacy and online safety settings changed. The way to establish
a family is have an adult account sign in to the
Microsoft family website, and add the child account to the adult account's family. The Xbox Settings portion of our website has a section called

Privacy & Online Safety where privacy settings can be adjusted. Be sure to let us know the results!

The account receiving the error is the actual adult account? or is the child account? child accounts can't change privacy settings.

The privacy settings are separate from the whethere the account is child or adult. If your account is set up as a child account, there might be a parent gamertag that could change your privacy settings...

Just to confirm, are you already an adult or still minor?

If you can't change your account's privacy settings via https://account.xbox.com/Settings, that means that your account is still being recognized by the system as child. It must be added to a Microsoft family group because only the organizer or adult account can change a child's privacy settings.
