Change password with 2FA

My son forgot his microsoft password and has 2fa set up on his account. How do we change his password because the phone number it is linked to I no longer have. So when we go to do the password reset it says if 2FA us set up then you can't recover it that way. What are we supposed to do so he can put his account on his new Xbox? Please help!

If you can't access the account though 2FA and are unable to reset the password, you would need to use the account recovery form here: Recover your account (live.com)

As a rule of thumb, I have a phone number and another email account linked to my personal account. I also recommend downloading and using the Authentication App from Microsoft too. Thus, you can use it to sign into your account to reset the password.

If you have your son's account on your computer or he has signed into a Microsoft site with his Microsoft account, you can check the saved passwords on the web browser. I know Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge allow you to view saved passwords.

Change your password and enable 2fa.

Change your password to more then 16 characters and enable 2fa then try again.
