Change my name (*not* my gamertag) without having it change across all Microsoft products?

Hi there,

as far as I know that currently is not possible, the name details are fetched from the Microsoft Accoun Name field and not somewhere else.

So every service/app that will get that information will show the same details.

If it's the Microsoft account name you're talking about, go here:
https://account.microsoft.com/profile/ and click "edit name". That name will show up when you send emails. Please note it could take a couple days or so to change across all systems, and it also could be immediate.

If it's the gamertag, you will have to change it via purchasing a change:

Your gamertag can be changed once for free. If you want to change it more than once, you'll be charged a fee in order to change the gamertag — $9.99 (in US dollars) for one change.

Note, though, that if your gamertag contains language that could be viewed as abusive, harmful, or otherwise inappropriate, Microsoft may change your gamertag without any prior notice.

I never changed my gamertag. My gamertag displays my complete name when I play online. I have been trying to change it, but microsoft want 10 bucks for it! Even though it states that you can change it atleast ones for free! This is a security issue for me.
Can someone help me change my gamertag not to display my full name without getting charged for it? Thanks!

Change your gamertag through a web browser

Here’s how:

1. Go to the Change gamertag page at
   account.xbox.com.
2. Sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
   
3. Enter your new gamertag, and then select Check Availability.
   
4. Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it.
   
   Note If your gamertag was created for you when you initially signed up for Xbox (meaning you did not choose it yourself), you can change it one time for free. Additional Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.
   
   If you created your own gamertag at signup and want to change it, you will be charged (fee varies by region and currency).
   

Change your gamertag on Xbox One

Note Xbox One may not be available in all locales.

1. Press the Xbox button
   to open the guide.
2. Select your gamerpic in the upper-left corner of the screen, and then press the
   A button on your controller
   
3. Select My profile, and then Customize profile. Select your gamertag to edit it.
   
4. You can either select one of the suggested available gamertags, or select
   Make my own to create your own:
   • If you’re making your own, type in the new gamertag, and then select
     Enter. If you receive a “Sorry, this gamertag is now reserved. Try another one” message, that means the gamertag is not available and you need to create another one.
     
   • If you want to use one of the gamertags that Xbox provides, but you don’t like any of the suggestions, select
     More to see additional gamertag suggestions.
5. When you're finished, select Claim it, and then select
   Sounds good.
6. Once you see your gamertag, select Close.

After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox, and if there is an additional cost, the payment option associated with your Microsoft account is charged. You don't need to tell your friends that you've changed your gamertag—their
Friends lists will be updated automatically.
