Change Gamertag

I am new to XBox live after recently purchasing a new XBox one and had a nightmare setting it up. It assigned me a gamertag and told me I could change it but when I was changing it I kept getting a message saying invalid and kept saying try these. At that
point I thought I had to select one of them but only found out from someone online last night I could have selected one of my own. Now I know this I have tried to change it but it says as I used my free one I now have to pay. I didnt understand when changing
the gamertag originally that I didn't have to have uttertulip as all the suggestions were coming up with that. I have just spent £400 on a brand new xbox and a few games ant cant afford to pay to change my gamertag. I spent quite a bit of time on the messanger
with the support team and they told me to contact yourself. Please can you help?

Even if you change your Gamertag, you purchases and saves are still locked to your account. I could change my gamertag right now and I still have everything. It stays with the email address you signed up with, not gamertag.

 

Need your opinion about a couple of gamer profiles

It cost 800 Microsoft Points to change a gamertag, $10. Change your gamertag of the one you like to something else, and then change the other one to the gamertag you like. $20 investment and your playing on the gamertag you want to play on, and you have the achievements to show off your progression of games.

 

Unfortunately there is no way to get another free change.

 

sorry im new to all this. Are you from xbox or another user? This all confuses me to be honest. I was originally looking to make a complaint and after over an hour I was sent a link to this page and told someone from xbox will contact me.

 

Support typically send people to the forums with incorrect information about gamertag changes. These are community forums so the majority of people here, me included, are just fellow gamers like yourself.

 

bugger, I spent over an hour today speaking to them and when I said was there anywhere I could make a complaint and see if I could speak to someone with authority they sent me the link and said contact them here. Im really disappointing with the customer
service. I would be surprised if Sony was this poor with Playstation. I thought they would clearly see im new to this and miss understood what the alternative names were they might just grant me the chance to change it. I mean, uttertulip is a name everyone
starts with apparently so its quite obvious I didnt understand I could change it or I would have. Thanks for responding anyway, They have done well confusing me so thanks for explaining it to me

 

No Uttertulip is not what everyone starts with. Everyone has a unique name and if they don't pick their own then they are assigned a randomly generated name. Your name does NOT look like one that was auto generated. Usually, they are a Name/phrase with
a series of numbers following it. Did you change the one that was generated for you? Maybe you was trying to assign your own name which was already taken and it offered variations of the choices you were making. Just a thought.

 

I promise you it was uttertulip. I typed in a few things to change it and it said something along the lines of invalid then I tried another name and it said something else (not sure what) but said these are available and they were all variations of uttertulip
so I selected the one I was most likely to remember as I wasn't sure why I needed it. I was talking to someone last night and they said I should change it. Coincidentally his first gamertag was uttertulip when he started his account last month but as he had
a xbox before he knew what he was doing. This is why I said its generic. Its no coincidence we were given similar variations of uttertulip
